After searching endlessly for a good complete guide to Tajikistan and discovered the previous edition of this book in the US embassy in Dushanbe. While the previous volumn was a little dated, I never the less found it to be a an excellent guide and very enjoyable read. So much so that I immediately ordered the updated edition, which is also excellent. This is the only travel book /guide I have found that addresses the "Silk Road" as it pertains to Tajikistan, and early culture of the region in an reasonably adequate manner. I have traveled the roads from Ayni to Penjikent and from Ayni toward Khujand, I have visited Hissor, and traveled into the Rasht Valley. THis book ws an excellent guide. Additionally, the various sections on history, to include very concise sections on early exploreres before and during the period of the "Great Game, " also excellent. While I have not yet traveled to east Tajikistan, I can hardly wait, and I am sure this volumn will be equally helpful

Really the only major work in English on Tajikistan. But do not expect it to be a "Lonely Planet" travel book on the country.

Good one, good quality, plenty of history. and I loved it very much. But as a traveler, would find it heavy to travel with.

fantastically detailed guide to the Pamirs. Extremely useful for planning.

A hefty 700 page book (so not for backpackers) but a beautiful introduction to this part of the world. Well illustrated throughout, the travel information is supplemented by a host of additional articles: the snow leopard, expeditions (fascinating reading- I love the account of intrepid Mrs Littledale in the 1890s: 'The men said that one of the camels was 35 or 40 years old. Mrs L., who tried to eat some of it, saw no reason to doubt that statement')also religion, language, ancient tribes...Having had a wonderful trip to Uzbekistan, I'm just saving up for a visit to this, its neighbour.

The book is a pleasure to read. Sufficient history, route planning and notes to allow you to plan your trip providing a wonderful background to fire you up to make the trip. I was there couple of years ago and plan going back in the coming years to explore the region from Osh through the Pamirs and into Xinjiang and this book will be a valuable aid to making that trip a reality. If you're going to Tadjikistan, you have to buy this book.

A truly amazing book about a beautiful country with wonderful people. It is a book for travelers, a tourist can not comprehend that it takes many pages to do justice to such beautiful and ancient land. I have traveled in 30 countries and worked in 15. Tajikistan is my favorite. As soon as I saw Tajikistan & the High Pamirs, I had to have it. I have not been disappointed. I could wish for more detailed maps, but good ones of Tajikistan are difficult to find.It is easy for the reader to see that, like me, Middleton and Thomas are in love with the country and the Tajik people. I worked at the Faculty of Agro-technology in Khujand for six weeks and lived with the Dean's family. They treated me like a family member, they were invited to parties and so they took me. They were Tajiks and Muslims, but the wife was the director of the Russian-language school, so I went to her faculty, May 9, Victory Day picnic and her teachers required me to dance with them! Yet, Middleton and Thomas tell about thing in the Ferghana valley that I did not learn about.I spent only a few days in Dushanbe, but I did see some of the sights there. I also took Goulya's hiking trip to the beautiful, nearby mountains, above Rakhmon's dacha. It is difficult to believe that the Pamirs are much more beautiful, but I do believe Middleton and Thomas - I just have to go back!

I have the first edition, 2008. It is difficult to imagine that the authors could have improved it. I am very fortunate, I have spent six weeks working in Khujand and living in a Tajik home. I was treated like family. The book tells of places where I was, but many more that I never got to. I know why Middleton and Thomas fell in love with they country, I want to go back! So, buy the book, read it, then find a way to go there! Unless you already know about the Great Game, be sure to read about it. If you know about the Great Game, you will know more about Central and South Asia than anyone in Washington! If you have a camera, you should come back from Tajikistan with many photos as good as the book cover!

The author, Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis, is a musicologist and cognitive psychologist who uses brain imaging technology in her research on what makes music so special compared to speech or textual reading. Her observation that music and repetition are integrally linked and are biologically rooted is the chief focus of this academic, nearly encyclopedic book, as she also tackles repetition in other aspects of our lives as well, such as daily routines of hygiene, grooming, and morning coffee, various religious practices, and learning, including television advertising. She also mentions pathological repetitions, as in obsessive-compulsive disorder and autism. The structure of music itself involves repetition, from the simple verse and refrain to pulsing minimalism, with rondos and fugues on the way. Repetition in speech, on the other hand, can become ineffective and boring, unless in oratory and propaganda, cadences and phrasing become musical. Composer Steve Reich even used repeated speech patterns to some of his music. Military drill commands are more effective in delivery and being heard if sung instead of shouted. Perhaps the most interesting and accessible chapter concerns our common experience of listening three times to novel music (or reading three times a complex novel) before able to judge its merits fairly. [See comment for elaboration and examples.] A characteristic of childhood is the need for verbatim repetition of stories, while adulthood prefers gist rephrasing and summations. Also presented are repetiton in trancing, in performances, in standardization of music via recordings, and data from experiments and imaging. This book is difficult reading, since it is scholarly and assumes some familiarity with classical musicology and even brain anatomy. A simple question, an onion of an answer. As layer by layer new ramifications are exposed, the core explanation remains hidden. Another book is needed for evolutionary aspects of music as communication, or, deeper, in the metaphysics of vibration, oscillation, and orbital repetitions. On Repeat is a fascinating book that offers much to consider and reconsider.

While the information in this book is fascinating, it reads like a thesis. This a book you read first thing in the morning, not while winding down at night. Great info, difficult read.

Advanced clinical analysis. An advanced knowledge of neurological mapping and processes is needed in order to follow...

All 5's

Written in an engaging style, Dr. Margulis’ book offers surprising insights into repetition as a fundamental feature of music. Drawing on diverse examples from across musical genres, the book is at once a well-researched text at the forefront of its field and an accessible answer to some of the music world’s most intriguing questions. The text is artfully woven with examples of common musical experiences (melodies getting stuck in our heads, or why we get tired of a song after listening to it too many times) interspersed with descriptions of clever experiments designed to help explain why these occur. The book underpins a most basic human experience with a multidisciplinary scientific approach that is a joy to read.

What a great book! What a great book! You really didn't need to see that sentence written more than once. But when it comes to music, repetition occurs at all levels and is necessary. This book showed me just how much, and why.Rigorous and engaging, On Repeat draws from many disciplines (music cognition, music theory, neuroscience, linguistics, musicology) to shine a welcome light on hitherto elusive truths about how repetition in music works to "play the mind".After reading this, I'll never listen to a piece of music quite the same way again. (In fact, as Margulis showed me, I never could have done anyway). If you're interesting in understanding how music (all kinds) works, you need this book.
