The Book of Woe: The DSM and the Unmaking of Psychiatry, by Gary Greenberg

Review

“[I]ndustrious and perfervid... Mr. Greenberg [argues] that the [DSM] and its authors, the American Psychiatric Association, wield their power arbitrarily and often unwisely, encouraging the diagnosis of too many bogus mental illnesses in patients (binge eating disorder, for example) and too much medication to treat them....Mr. Greenberg argues that psychiatry needs to become more humble, not more certain and aggressive....Greenberg is a fresher, funnier writer. He paces the psychiatric stage as if he were part George Carlin, part Gregory House.”—Dwight Garner, The New York Times “Greenberg’s documentation of the DSM-5 revision process is an essential read for practicing and in-training psychotherapists and psychiatrists and is an important contribution to the history of psychiatry.”—Library Journal“The rewriting of the bible of psychiatry shakes the field to its foundations in this savvy, searching exposé.  Deploying wised-up, droll reportage from the trenches of psychiatric policy-making and caustic profiles of the discipline’s luminaries, Greenberg subjects the practices of the mental health industry—his own included—to a withering critique. The result is a compelling insider’s challenge to psychiatry’s scientific pretensions—and a plea to return it to its humanistic roots.”—Publisher’s Weekly, starred review“Greenberg is an entertaining guide through the treacheries and valuable instances of the DSM, interviewing members on both sides of the divide and keeping the proceedings conversational even when discussing the manual’s pretensions toward epistemic iteration. He also brings his own practice into [The Book of Woe], with examples of the DSM falling woefully short in capturing the complexity of personality. Bright, humorous and seriously thoroughgoing, Greenberg takes all the DSMs for a spin as revealing as the emperor’s new clothes.”—Kirkus Reviews“[A] brilliant look at the making of DSM-5...entertaining, biting and essential...Greenberg builds a splendid and horrifying read....[he] shows us vividly that psychiatry’s biggest problem may be a stubborn reluctance to admit its immaturity.”—David Dobbs, Nature.com“Gary Greenberg is a thoughtful comedian and a cranky philosopher and a humble pest of a reporter, equal parts Woody Allen, Kierkegaard, and Columbo. The Book of Woe is a profound, and profoundly entertaining, riff on malady, power, and truth. This book is for those of us (i.e., all of us) who've ever wondered what it means, and what's at stake, when we try to distinguish the suffering of the ill from the suffering of the human.”—Gideon Lewis-Kraus, author of A Sense of Direction“This could be titled The Book of ... Whoa! An eye-popping look at the unnerving, often tawdry politics of psychiatry.”—Gene Weingarten, two-time Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Fiddler in the Subway“Bringing the full force of his wit, warmth, and tenacity to this accessible inside account of the latest revision of psychiatry’s diagnostic bible, Gary Greenberg has written a book to rival the importance of its subject. Keenly researched and vividly reported, The Book of Woe is frank, impassioned, on fire for the truth—and best of all, vigorously, beautifully alive to its story’s human stakes.”—Michelle Orange, author of This Is Running for Your Life “Gary Greenberg has become the Dante of our psychiatric age, and the DSM-5 is his Inferno. He guides us through the not-so-divine comedy that results when psychiatrists attempt to reduce our hopelessly complex inner worlds to an arbitrary taxonomy that provides a disorder for everybody. Greenberg leads us into depths that Dante never dreamed of. The Book of Woe is a mad chronicle of so-called madness.”—Errol Morris, Academy Award–winning director, and author of A Wilderness of Error  “In this gripping, devastating account of psychiatric hubris, Gary Greenberg shows that the process of revising the DSM remains as haphazard and chaotic as ever. His meticulous research into the many failures of DSM-5 will spark concern, even alarm, but in doing so will rule out complacency. The Book of Woe deserves a very wide readership.”—Christopher Lane, author of Shyness: How Normal Behavior Became a Sickness“Gary Greenberg’s The Book of Woe is about the DSM in the way that Moby-Dick is about a whale—big-time, but only in part. An engaging history of a profession’s virtual bible, The Book of Woe is also a probing consideration of those psychic depths we cannot know and those social realities we pretend not to know, memorably rendered by a seasoned journalist who parses the complexities with a pickpocket’s eye and a mensch’s heart.  If I wanted a therapist, and especially if I wanted to clear my mind of cant, I’d make an appointment with Dr. Greenberg as soon as he could fit me in.”—Garret Keizer, author of Privacy and The Unwanted Sound of Everything We Want “The Book of Woe is a brilliant, ballsy excursion into the minefield of modern psychiatry. Greenberg has wit, energy, and a wonderfully skeptical mind. If you want to understand how we think of mental suffering today—and why, and to what effect—read this book.”—Daniel Smith, author of Monkey Mind“[Greenberg’s] fascinating history of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (the DSM)...show[s] just how muddled the boundaries of mental health truly are.”—Chloë Schama, Smithsonian“Greenberg argues persuasively that the current DSM encourages psychiatrists to reach beyond their competence....I’m impressed by Greenberg’s reporting, his subtlety of thought, his dedication to honesty, and his literacy....a very good book.”—Benjamin Nugent, Slate.com“The process of assembling [DSM-5] has been anything but smooth, as The Book of Woe relates....Greenberg argues—persuasively—that this fifth edition of the DSM arises not out of any new scientific understanding but from one of the periodic crises of psychiatry....invaluable.”—Laura Miller, Salon.com“In The Book of Woe, Greenberg takes the lay reader through a history of the DSM, which is really a history of psychiatry....[a] fascinating and well-researched account.”—Suzanne Koven, The Boston Globe“[E]ngaging, radical and generally delectable...Greenberg is a practicing psychotherapist who writes with the insight of a professional and the panache of a literary journalist....[a] brilliant take-down of the psychiatric profession...The Book of Woe offers a lucid and useful history.”—Julia M. Klein, The Chicago Tribune“This is a landmark book about a landmark book....Greenberg paints a picture so compelling and bleak that it could easily send the vulnerable reader into therapy....takes the reader deep inside the secretive world of the panels and personalities that have spent years arguing about which disorders and symptoms they would keep and which they would discard in the new DSM.”—Robert Epstein, Scientific American

Gary Greenberg gets it right and dishes it out on a sumptuous platter of history with a whole lotta gentle direct humor woven through his very exposing/disclosing book. In a down to earth readable style (not psychedelic, psychiatric, psycho, academic bureaucratic mumble jumble jargon) he's drawn the curtain back and exposed the Wizard of Id? Or maybe the Wizard of Ego? The Wizard of War? The DSM-5; a book written by committee; members who sit around a table every so many years and make up stuff, a book that has no scientific basis. We had to study the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) when I was in graduate school (and who didn't like looking up what was wrong with their family members and self-diagnosing themselves?). It's merely a checklist of symptoms, not causation, not a mental health diagnosis, not a scientific diagnosis, not a medical diagnosis. "Check, check, check, check." "OK now this is who you are." Then a few years down the line: "Check, check, oh?" "OK now you're not that anymore".And it's very political. "Combat fatigue" was taken out at the height of the Vietnam War. It was veterans who studied then lobbied to get "post traumatic stress" in not only for themselves but also for children who were horribly abused. That is a label that at least speaks to causation. Then homosexuals lobbied to get "homosexuality" out, now "transgendered" want to be kept in.Greenberg lays out the history of the DSM, it's pioneering characters including its subsequent characters who now say "oops", but to his credit the author exposes the story and the behind the scenes of the story, treats the history in a respectful but direct way using humor; making them into people, not gurus who have the holy seeing as to who you are based on a checklist.I didn't know until reading Greenberg's book that out of the history of slavery came one of the first sort of DSM labels. That slaves running away was a mental disorder. If that doesn't say it all about so-called mental illness. If you don't accept the horrible conditions of your life you are mentally ill! "Now take these drugs!" In the new DSM book, in the DSM-5 if you grieve longer than two weeks for a loved one's death you are officially mentally ill.Greenberg lays out the money issue as to why now? Why now revamp the DSM? Why now? Because the American Psychiatric Association (APA) is in need of money. With all the criticism they were getting for drug money flowing into their coffers as well as the drug companies doing trainings for the APA, for drugging the hell out of our kids, the APA greatly reduced the drug money connection. The DSM is their best selling book. They need the money but as the reviews on the DSM-5 show anyone can get the "diagnosis" and "code numbers" on line, free from which to do their insurance billing. DSM-5 not needed.Greenberg's description of the "committee work" I found hilarious and sad for it is exactly the same process I witnessed of the government re-writing the health, safety and well-being of children in day care regulations. It went on forever and the main folks advocating for no safety rules were some of the day care providers with the poor histories of providing care to children. Then like the DSM committee work it all went on line for public comment. The committee work Greenberg watched in action and the committee I watched in action were the similar dynamic although because a couple of us die hard advocates were on the committee the government did at least on paper a better job of keeping safety regulations. And yes, like Greenberg witnessed with his committee, the day care regulation committee also tried to keep their meetings secret and attempted to take away the first amendment rights of us advocates who spoke to the media.Where did this phenomenon start coalescing from in history? Once again it looks like from the Germans and a guy named Emil Kraepelin in the mid 1800s (which is where and when the whole public education system started) and by the end of the 1800s started the classification system, his "neat categories of mental illness".But it was really war that jumped the gun into providing a warm petri dish in which psychiatrists were grown and thrust out into the world to try to stop soldiers returning from war from having emotional reactions about their experiences, well maybe not stop the emotional reactions but to deny they had anything to do with war. 1952 the year the DSM first got published was the year that Dr. Ewan Cameron was the president of the APA. Working out of Canada for the C.I.A. he headed up the MKULTRA program up there Where they experimented on children (see "The Franklin Cover Up"). 1952 was the year the USA got schizophrenia. Out of war sprang our modern mental health (cover up) systems.Lloyd de Mause and Alice Miller probably had the most direct diagnosis for our modern era in that "all war is about child abuse" but I don't think the author reviewed that aspect of our modern mental illness. Maybe his next book?A great read, a fun read, many laughing out loud moments. Laughing takes power and control away from those insisting that their way makes sense, only makes sense, it's the only way if you will only obey them. Please read and enjoy this book.

For anyone (therapists and laypersons alike) who has ever read parts of the DSM (any version) and come away suspecting that they themselves could readily receive a large number of the diagnoses described, depending upon the day, Gary Greenberg has addressed these concerns eloquently. As a therapist working in the field for more than 17 years, I have felt my anger rise steadily at the reductionist hubris presented as fact by proponents of the medical model of human distress. Greenberg's expose links the history of psychiatry, with its relentless pursuit of theoretical and financial legitimacy through medicalization, to the reductionism inherent in this paradigm. Although the topic of Big Pharma's contributions to the medicalization of psychiatry is mentioned in the book, it is not Greensberg's focus and should be expanded upon, given the market-driven nature of nearly all aspects of our current culture. At times, the seemingly endless debates among those involved in the DSM5 project was heavy reading, and I was tempted to skim several chapters in the book. But for the most part, it reads like a spy novel - complete with secrets, conspiracy theories, and betrayals- leaving the reader wondering just whose side people are on, or indeed, what exactly those sides represent, particularly for people seeking help for what is termed, "mental illness." Overall, Greenberg is successful in his efforts to invite the reader to share his critical look at psychiatry and its attempts to reduce human suffering to quantifiable and reimbursable categories. He reminds us that, so far, the human mind remains a mystery, and more than the sum of its biological parts.

“Mental illness is not real, but let’s pretend it is” : DSM5You might think the title or my review is an exaggeration or misstatement of the raison d’etre for any DSM but in fact one of the tenets of this volume, the DSM 5, as well as Book of Woe, is that in fact mental illnesses are artificial and artificially constructed categories that have no reality. Psychiatrists are counseled, within the manual’s pages, against the “reification” of mental disease, that is, turning what is a concept into a real thing, even as the entire DSM purports to describe “reality” in terms like “schizophrenia” and “bipolar disorder” as well as other “oppositional defiant disorder” and other questionable maladies of modern living.Book of Woe is a history of the development of DSM 5 but it is also a fundamentally a critique of Psychiatry, even as the author, a psychologist, confesses he benefits financially from using the very manual he (mostly) disparages.Well-written and even entertaining, this book is a must read and an eye opener for anyone who has ever trusted their psychiatrist to know what she or he is doing when making a diagnosis.

Grant Maxwell is a seer, this is a work of genius and the most important book I have read in a long time. It helped me understand many things about myself and, significantly, about the world we live in. I have been perpetually consumed with politics, as many of us have since the election. I was stumped with the concern: how can half of the people want someone who is going to actually solve their problems saying, for example, I will raise the minimum-wage, I will protect the environment. And the other half of the people preferred someone who said: I am the only one who can solve your problems, evoking omnipotence. Maxwell frames the modern world in terms of modes of consciousness, two of which are the mythological and the rational (to paraphrase) and when you look at it this way, our American (and global) zeitgeist becomes much more of a work in progress. People have tried to tell me that I need to understand the other political side, but it is in reading this book that I really began to understand where that process begins. Also, to consider the limitations of the modern point of view; the sterility of a disenchanted world. And, what is so visionary and important is that Maxwell begins to suggest where we are all headed; what type of mentality might come next, and whether both the mythological, rational and other orientations might not only need each other but need to transcend themselves into a new paradigm, which he also suggests. He gets across visceral and essentials truths about our world, and the content of the perceptual "modern" paradigm that we take for granted..As for what resonated with me personally--I take it to the political yet this is not primarily a book about politics--but is about so much more As hard as things are these days, this book, out in 2017, gives me great hope for what's to come.Though Maxwell traces the roots of his ideas to Jung, James, Whitehead, Tarnas and others, I really don't know how he came up with all of this in quite the way he did. As you may gather from my review, I'm grateful... Suffice to say that when a writer as brilliant as Maxwell tackles these complex aspects of the human condition, it is a literary moment to be cherished.

The first principle underlying The Dynamics of Transformation is that we are living in an epochal age of great changes. Whether or not the reader believes this, we do seem to be living in a period of major upheavals and disruptions in politics, the economy, human relationships, technology, spirituality and other areas. Even if you believe we are seeing the swinging of a pendulum that will return to more traditional values and principles, you have to recognize that a broad part of the population does believe we are in a time of major changes, so it’s helpful and interesting to understand those who do see ongoing trends, rather than self-limiting cycles. You may see the trends of change we’re experiencing as largely positive, or largely negative. You may be encouraged to resist many of these changes, or you may be embracing them and want to hasten their arrival. You may be an optimist or a pessimist.Regardless of your perspective, I don’t think you will find a better guide for our times than Grant Maxwell, in this book. He is an intellectual mapmaker. No matter where you see us headed as a species or a culture and no matter where you would like to see us go, I think Maxwell lays out the territory and underlying concepts better than anyone. The book covers a number of areas, or streams as Maxwell calls them, and does so with a detail that is useful without overwhelming the reader. It’s not an easy read as befits a book of big ideas but it’s clearly written. Important and new ideas, or ones presented in new ways and relationships, require effort on the part of the reader, but you will be richly rewarded as you weave these ideas into your own thinking and experiences. The Dynamics of Transformation is a rare bargain as it bears and rewards reading and rereading. I see myself coming back to it again and again. The book contains thinkers that I had discovered and explored already, Carl Jung and Alfred North Whitehead, and re-introduced ones I’d initially explored but been distracted away from, such as Jean Gebser and Thomas Nagel.Maxwell sees a number of pieces of the puzzle such as “Hegel’s idealism, William James’ pragmatism, Jung’s analytical psychology, Whitehead’s process philosophy” and others, combining to form at least part of the picture. Whitehead’s philosophy of process seems to be central and appropriately makes it easier to see this all from a higher viewpoint that can accept a large number of inputs and factors. Maxwell does focus our attention on what he sees now as the most important factors that both define and help shape our present evolution, and what he sees as an emerging mode and worldview.Emergence is perhaps the primary operative concept throughout the book. If Maxwell is right, and I think he is, we are witnessing the birth of a new stage of human consciousness. We cannot know where this will take us, and we can be sure that we are in for more surprises and revolutionary changes than we can imagine. Trying to forecast the details is fun and interesting, but it’s too soon to write any book tied to such concrete predictions. This book sticks to the big picture, and we are all free to speculate further on the future details. I expect Maxwell will do just that as he explores and develops these ideas further in subsequent books. Maxwell is a young and vital philosopher, so reading this book could be the equivalent of discovering the Beatles just after they left Hamburg. The Dynamics of Transformation is a kind of forecast of the future, but one that remains rigorous and cautious in the specifics of its predictions, but bold in its scholarship. It sets out the territory and the factors that are working on us as individuals, as members of cultures - really nested and overlapping subcultures, and as members of the species. One of the greatest challenges of making predictions is balancing reasonableness and speculation. A conservative prediction of change along established trajectories is likely to be fairly accurate, at least in the short run, but not very interesting or useful in the long run. Predicting more of the same is hardly earth-shattering. Highly speculative predictions will be much more interesting, but too many people will disregard them, limiting their usefulness in the present by not being taken seriously. As a dedicated philosopher, Maxwell sidesteps these challenges by concentrating on the concepts and perspectives behind and encompassing our time. The book moves from more firmly established ideas to more speculative ones, but all of them have solid reasons to be seriously considered. There are twelve chapters, each devoted to a concept, not so much to convince us of their validity, but to give us the basis of our own understanding, as well as their relationships to each other. Maxwell himself explicitly makes this point, underlying his respect for the reader. He is a scholar and a teacher, and one who wants to inspire and guide rather than dictate and direct. This is not so much a book of conclusions, but a book of premises. It is not trying to be the last word but is seeking to begin to define our period of evolution. It provides a solid foundation for understanding our present as well as our future, as the process of human evolution unfolds. The subjects of the chapters are:1. “World Views Create Worlds”: The Participatory Quality of Process2. “The Circle of the Given”: Novelty and the Will to Believe3. “The Reconciling Third”: An Integrative Method4. “Jumps of All Sorts”: The Discontinuity of Process5. “A Series of Stages”: Development Through Emergent Phases6. “An Extraordinary Threshold”: The Emergence of a New World View7. “Symmetry across Scale”: The Fractal Quality of Process8. “A Potentiality for Actual Entities”: Forms, Archetypes and Eternal Objects9. “A Falling Together in Time”: Qualitative Temporality and Formal Causation10. “The Teleological Introduction of Novelty”: Final Causation11. “An Exponentially Accelerating Process”: The Increasing Ingression of Novelty12. “The Concretion of Time”: Progressive Degrees of Spatial-Temporal FreedomAnd an epilogue, “A Third Copernican Revolution”: Archetypal CosmologyThis may seem like a daunting outline of a book and it’s not to be taken lightly, but we are given a solid understanding of the nature and importance of these concepts and how they are related to each other and to our emerging evolutionary path. The book is both scholarly and practical, and very accessible.Previous periods of significant jumps in human evolution have shared features and forces working to mold them so we can learn a lot by glancing at those periods in the rear-view mirror, while coming to appreciate how those forces may be mutating and changing themselves in shaping our future. In the fifties the future seemed to be full of flying cars, robots, and television. We don’t have quite that world envisioned, but we are living in a world increasingly shaped by advances in travel, communication, and technology, but beyond that, we are shaped by ideas and concepts, and Maxwell concentrates on those in the context of past revolutionary periods such as the Axial Age and the Enlightenment. The book refuses to get caught up in the more superficial aspects of our future as it delves into the intellectual and emotional foundations of human change and evolution operating now. It looks backward, and it looks forward, but always deeply and broadly. The Dynamics of Transformation embraces, explores and integrates more than a few important thinkers, some of whom are well known, and others, less well known and just as important. These thinkers had overlapping interests and ideas, as they often directly influenced each other, and indirectly, as part of this process. Maxwell looks at important figures from the past such as Nietzsche and William James and those of the present, Charles Taylor and Richard Tarnas. He concentrates on the present and the more recent past as being more useful for the present ages I think, and of course the broad range of thinkers he does address are themselves products of much earlier thinkers. The book tackles an enormously broad and deep topic and wisely the concepts are kept manageable without doing any disservice to the subjects at hand and the overall thrust of the book. Maxwell uses language that is precise and requires work to unpack, but clarity is first and foremost.Human evolution as we experience it now, is an evolution of consciousness and culture, and is really a process of integration. We are absorbing and building on previous stages, with new ideas, new technology, new relationships, and new histories and experiences. You can’t know how the cake is going to taste until you take it out of the oven and cut yourself a slice, especially if you’re using new ingredients and techniques. Maxwell has given us the best overview of the ingredients and processes that he sees operating in our world. He avoids making any firm predictions for the timing or the experiences of the final result, and of course our human evolution is an ongoing process. But I predict that in the not too distant future, this book will be recognized for its wisdom and power in helping us all navigate and understand this human journey we are all on.I read this book sometime ago for the first time, before rereading it. I have not written this review until now despite my inner voice demanding this public response, because I wanted to sit with the book and its ideas before writing. This book deserves a broad audience and careful consideration. Maxwell is not afraid to give the reader lots to think about, but he respects the reader to come to their own conclusions about what is written. I have run across few books that are as vitally important for our future as individuals and as a species, as this one. I cannot recommend this book too highly. It contains both the spark and the fuel for the fire that you will discover if you are interested in our future, regardless of your previous notions and perspectives. This book presents a wonderful big picture view of where we are now and where we seem to be headed for the future. This book is not seeking to put forth any ideology or system of thought, but clearly lays out the powerful and perhaps archetypal forces that seem to be shaping us and our world. Maxwell makes this clear: “the emerging mode ultimately reconciles seemingly irreconcilable world views by discovering the inevitable partial truths in each side of any controversy.”It will be for future historians and philosophers to write the story of our age, but we are given here an invaluable guide to our present situation. I think this process began some time ago and processes are ongoing with no punctuation, except those recognized in hindsight. We are wise to do what we can to try to understand as much as we can, knowing that the future will surprise us, regardless of how much we think we know. The Dynamics of Transformation is an excellent place to develop a context to understand, navigate and shape our present situation and what the future may bring. I am eager for our future and I look forward to having more guidance in arriving there. I think Maxwell has just begun to provide us with such guidance and this book is a great beginning. Don’t hesitate to plunge into The Dynamics of Transformation before our emergent future pulls you in.

In the old days, when we were typing on a non-electric typewriter, exercises were crafted using words that would build up not only dexterity, but finger strength. Ruth Ben'Ary's classic Touch Typing book brings not only these great word lists, but samples of paragraphs and manuscripts to practice speed drills, practice typing numerals and special characters, business and personal letters, and a great supplement of Forms of Address, Salutations, and Complimentary Closings. I don't believe these ever go out of style. Even though technology has changed massively, the keyboard has not. This little gem of a book will help anyone become more familiar with touch typing, using all eight fingers and one thumb and NOT looking at the keyboard. As the cover byline states: "Teach Yourself How to Type Like a Professional"!

Oh My Goodness, this was a great bible study...I loved it I listened to it in my car and I couldn't stop listening!!! I was awesome!!!! It was so good I live on Cape Cod and I would just drive like I was a tourist just to listen! I learned so much about Esther and how much she and her story apply to my everyday life and how to look at my situation and the situation of life and how to decree and declare some thing in my life and how to approach and deal with them in a totally different way. Thank you Pastor Swindoll for such amazing bible study, I can't wait to get into the others.

Even though I have read the book of Esther many times Mr.Swindoll brought out views and concepts that I failed to pick up in reading Scripture!! An excellent source of Scripture for the serious student ofThe Bible who wants to add to their knowledge and understanding ofthe Jewish woman called Esther....Highly recommend 😇

Chuck Swindoll provides an in depth look at Esther that surpasses all others. He show how an invisible God is ever present when we think He's absent. Love how God always win. This is a must read in the series especially as he takes one through the various characters of the Book of Esther.

I give this a 5 star rating because it is a wonderful back to basics of what's really important in young girls today and that is inner beauty. Esther was outwardly beautiful but it was her grace and integrity that made her shine. We don't gain real joy or peace from what the world calls beauty and young girls have been so brainwashed regarding this in todays society. Chuck Swindoll does a skilled job in helping you live this story and gain a deep insight into this girl and her high level of integrity. She listened to wisdom, she could keep a secret, she thought things through and made a plan and many more attributes one should desire. I would recommend this book to anyone. It is especially good for teaching her qualities to our daughters so is a great study to do with family.

Great read. I was preaching on Esther so I read this book before and it offers some really great insights and is an entertaining read.

Chuck Swindoll does an excellent job of breaking the story down into parts and relating each step of the story to life in our society today. We really are no different in living lives that matter to GOD, we still fall far short of being the people of faith. Anyone that desires to take a look at what can be accomplished by one person who chooses to be faithful to what is right in the eyes of GOD, this book shows what can be accomplished and how GOD will be there to guide the way.

Charles Swindoll won my heart long ago. Queen Esther won my heart after hearing Chuck Swindoll teach on her for about 10 weeks. It is an excellent read and manual for understanding when we don't see God he is working and weaving events to fulfill his purposes for us in life. He used the most unsuspecting people to save the Jews. This story has been a lesson in my Bible class for 6th grade girls for years.

is the next book we are going thru in our mens group from church. we have been enjoying and learning from all the other books and I don't expect anything different from this one.
