Rich People Problems (Crazy Rich Asians Trilogy), by Kevin Kwan

Review

“Flashy, funny... Delicious, the juicy stuff of classic high-society drama... Rich People Problems is a fun tabloid romp full of over-the-top shenanigans, like a society party brawl that ruins both a Ramon Orlina glass sculpture of the hostess’s breasts and ‘a special pig that had only eaten truffles its entire life and was flown in from Spain...’ A memorable, laugh-out-loud Asian glitz fest that’s a pure pleasure to read.” —Steph Cha, USA Today “I gobbled all three volumes of Kevin Kwan’s gossipy, name-droppy and wickedly funny Crazy Rich Asians trilogy as if they were popcorn. (Really fresh, still-warm popcorn, with that good European butter… but I digress.) The novels, set among three intergenerational and ultrarich Chinese families and peppered with hilarious explanatory footnotes, are set mostly in Singapore but flit easily from one glamorous world city to another… Irresistible.” –Moira Macdonald, The Seattle Times “Kevin Kwan has done it again. The mastermind behind the delicious Crazy Rich Asians series has drawn a cult-like following with his extravagant tales of Asia’s upper echelon. He’s back at with the series’s final installment, Rich People Problems (rest assured, it’s just as enthralling as the trilogy’s first two volumes).” –Isabel Jones, InStyle “[A] hilarious family drama… This delightfully wicked family saga will have you laughing over your summer daiquiris at the long-buried secrets of Asia’s most privileged families and their rich people problems.” —Redbook Magazine, “20 Summer Beach Reads to Stock Up On Now”  “There are a lot of lines in Kevin Kwan’s forthcoming novel Rich People Problems that will make you both roll your eyes and chuckle at the pure absurdity of the characters… Pure entertainment. Think: Bravo’s ‘Housewives’ but with a lot more money and, as a result, a lot more drama.” —Taylor Bryant, Nylon “Thank god for Kwan... In Rich People Problems—Kwan’s third installment in his Crazy Rich Asians series—even more insane family hijinks unfold when greed and jealousy get fortune-hungry schemers up in a wild tizzy. Catch up on the whole saga before the film’s release.” –W Magazine

I was definitely into book one. While I’m not drawn to this genre normally, I needed some light summer reading. Well, I kinda of fell in love with Nick and Rachel and their perspective of the story. I was saddened when Rachel lost a large part of the limelight in book two. But to almost completely disappear in book three was just weird. The author can write. There’s no doubting that. I’m just unsure of his reasoning behind having so many characters throughout the series and then taking the main character out of the equation in book 2/3- very odd. It reminded me of a film where the original lead wouldn’t sign up for the sequel. Book three could’ve been a lot better. Definitely a let down for me.

In the concluding book of the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy, the center of attention actually falls on Shang Su Yi, the matriarch of the Young-Leong-Cheng families. She has fallen ill and with her death approaching, her entire family returns to Singapore. At the start of the book, Nicholas Young is still estranged from his grandmother and with him apparently no longer the heir to the Tyersall estate, other parts of the extended family begin to jockey for position so they can inherit the most fabulous estate in Singapore. The story focuses on the trials and tribulations Astrid Leong is going through as she attempts to divorce her husband Michael while keeping alive her new relationship with Charlie Wu. It also focuses on Nicholas as he wonders what he should do now that his Grandmother has fallen ill. And we get a lot of attention paid to the Shangs, some attention on Rachel's brother, a good deal of attention on Kitty Pong and Oliver and almost no attention on Rachel. It seems Rachel's story was mostly done so we don't focus on her too much. That's a pity because she was an amazing artistic creation and I would have loved to see more about her. And that's why this book only merits four stars. All in all, it's a good conclusion that could have been better. For me, the best part of the book were Su Yi's WWII flashbacks. If Kwan doesn't want to continue this story then I hope he would write a story about Su Yi. She has always been amazing and now she sounds even more intriguing.

I bought the entire trilogy at once. I so enjoyed the first book that I immediately went on to the second, only to realize near the end, that I was reading the 3rd book. Even so, I was able to understand everything. However, when finished with the 3rd, I delved into the second, and had many aha moments, so this is why this happened and so forth. I loved this trilogy and recommend reading it in the correct order. All of the top reviews say everything I believe. I will go a step further. If you are not into big spending and consider it obnoxious, then this series is not for you. I thoroughly ENJOY all the brand names and exciting places. I am now passing the trilogy on to my best friend. I'm sure she will love it as much as I did. It may bot be a pulitzer prize winner but it is definitely entertaining. Oh yes, and I DID skim the final book again to clarify some of the finer points.

This is the last of the trilogy and quite frankly, it makes me sad that there will no longer be another installment of Crazy Rich Asians. It is a fun and easy read and widely entertaining. It puts the reader into a fairy tale world of money and power, a world I shall never see (nor do I want to), and highlights the family members' struggles, from trying to lead a normal life to attaining more wealth and power. This last book dwells more into Astrid's struggles to fit in, Nick's internal struggles with his family and we also learn about the matriarch Su Yi's past. It ties up some loose ends and is a great conclusion to the series.

Well, I just finished my 3rd book in this Trilogy..... and I am so sad that it ended...When I started with the first one I became so involved with the characters. Kevin has a way of writing that puts you right inside the book and you can actually feel and see what is happening... My only hope is that he continues on with these characters and doesn't stop with just 3. I used to read alot and during the last 10 years hadn't finished one book, until THESE ! I highly recommend these books........ with the first one give yourself some time to get involved and once you do they will be very hard to put down.........

The third book in this amazing trilogy that has opened the world of the "crazy rich asians" to many of us for the first time, is an excellent, very entertaining and well written summer read. Full of mind boggling fashion, interior design, food and spending excesses, this grand finale takes the reader on a journey full of emotional suspense and plot twists, as many familiar and a few new characters meet again in Singapore and in stunning, luxurious locales across the planet. I loved and enjoyed this book from the first page to the last and read it way too fast. Time to read them all again from the beginning on the beach this summer. Kevin Kwan is masterful at being extremely entertaining, creating a literary world, characters and locations that I can see, hear, smell and feel and weaving a web of relationships that display a deep understanding of the intricacies of life and human perceptions, desires and interactions. Thus I have found myself again and again in the characters of his books and have come away enriched from immersing myself in this strange world.

This book is a culmination of Kwan's trilogy. It's hard to believe there are people who live this way, but Kwan says he had to tone reality down to make it more believable. I admit that this series is addicting and fun to read--not so much ha-ha fun, but interesting. The two main characters are not nearly as engrossing as the people who surround them in the story.

The first two were fun and definitely showed the crazy (no pun) side of the super-rich. This, being the third and final in the trilogy seemed rushed. I felt like some of these backstories would have been better spread out in the first two books because by the third, halfway through, it felt as though the author was quickly trying to tie up all the loose ends. And while the books started with Rachel, this book focused on Nick and his family.

Amazon.com Review

Creativity is highly prized in the business world but once that creativity extends to bookkeeping, things can get a bit sticky. Bruce McNall's creative career afforded him celebrity status, millions of dollars, an opulent lifestyle, and, in the end, a five-year prison term. His memoir, Fun While It Lasted, which shares the same breeziness hinted at in its title, is both entertaining and a bit depressing. McNall parlayed a boyhood interest in rare coins into a profitable livelihood even before entering college. Within a few years, he was traveling the world, buying up coins from shady dealers and reselling them to Hollywood's elite. McNall played fast and loose with his prices and accounting and profited handsomely off a market that he helped create. From coins, he branched out, trading in thoroughbred racehorses, and buying the L.A. Kings hockey team. Ultimately, the FBI caught up with him and McNall was jailed for fraud. In reflecting on his life and crimes, McNall heartily endorses the assessment made by a Los Angeles Daily News reporter: "In the end, Bruce McNall wanted too much to be liked." And while that explanation is awfully sweet, if one judges by his choices and lifestyle it seems like his problem was plain old greed. Despite his financial success and stunning talent as a salesman, McNall always seemed to crave more money and power and was willing to break laws and lie to achieve them. Because it details a life more dramatic than most, and because its compelling central character ultimately gets his comeuppance, Fun While It Lasted, co-written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael D'Antonio, manages to be both a fun adventure and a cautionary moral tale. --John Moe

From Publishers Weekly

When McNall was a kid, his dad wasn't emotionally available, and, as a result, McNall grew up with a need to be liked. An oversized need, actually, which is why, he says, he defrauded several financial institutions out of $236 million. As a teenager, McNall was fascinated by ancient coins and soon became one of the world's leading collectors and dealers. Later, he got into horse racing, creating ownership syndicates that included the rich and famous. He bought a movie production company, a Canadian football team and the L.A. Kings hockey team. He brought Wayne Gretzky to the U.S. and, in 1992, was appointed chairman of the National Hockey League. Alas, ethics weren't a part of McNall's voyage to millionairedom. He abused his position to buy ancient coins well below the wholesale price, smuggled coins out of Tunis, paid under-the-table commissions and, before long, graduated to fraud. Taking payment for coins he had not purchased and using assets that didn't exist to secure loans, McNall was essentially operating a loan pyramid. By the time the FBI came to call, his company had nine different sets of books. McNall got 70 months for his crimes and offers a detailed but unconvincing account of the rigors of minimum-security federal prison camps. In fact, McNall is unconvincing as anything other than a white-collar conman, and his story, while sufficiently dramatic, doesn't provide enough backbone to give him credibility, never mind sympathy.Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Very entertaining read here for old Kings fans of the Gretzky era. McNall sadly had some things catch up with him all along having good intentions for all he knew. Really sort of sad story but a good read for those thinking of taking on debt also. Bruce McNall trated me well as a fan. He did a special thing for me that I will never forget and be in debt to him. During the 1993 Stanley Cup playoffs being a season seat holder, If I had wanted to attend the playoff games I would have to had bought the entire 4 rounds as a package. At the time I could not afford it. I handed him a small hand written note explaining how much a fan I was and that I just wanted to attend the Stanley Cup Final Home games. Which that season I'm sure he was saying to himself, "I doubt the Kings will even make it to the Final". Well, a few days after I handed him that note, he had the Kings sales guy sell me the tickets to the Stanley Cup Final home games. The salesman was not happy but Mr. McNall came through for me as a fan, and that was the first year the Kings made it for the first time in franchise history to the Stanley Cup Finals. Anyways, I always wished I could have said thank you to Mr. McNall but never got the chance. Sadly the Kings didn't win the Cup then, but it was still great I was there thanks to Mr. McNall who if people that read this book will realize that he IS a stand up guy. He paid his dues and this book is an insight into the world of fame and fortunes but always sadly being a step back. It was a great read for a GOOD MAN that should have gotten still to this day much more fame than what happened to him. If it wasn't for Bruce McNall, there would be no Anaheim Ducks, no Tampa Bay Lightning, no Florida Panthers and no Staples Center to this very day. It was basically all his doing regardless how he got it done. The LA Kings organization should be ashamed for not giving him more credit and recognition for what he accomplished. Imo, The Kings wouldn't even have the 2 Stanley Cups today had it not been for him bringing Gretzky to LA and fans and making hockey a big thing in Los Angeles. He is a GOOD MAN that deserves much better and tells it all in this great read. I wish Mr. McNall the best and hope to someday have him sign my book.

Great tale of a very Romantic life. My hats off to McNall!!Coins, Art, Auctions, Smuggling, Deals, Handshakes, Race Horses, Billionaires, Commodity Trading, Movie Producers, Beverly Hills, Investments, Sports, The FBI, and a hardworking guy who made it big, paid a big price, and never lost his sense of humor.I really liked this read. This guy did more by age 30 then most men could even dream about in a lifetime.

Worth every bit of the one cent I paid (and the +$3.99 postage). Actually, it is a good tale told by a man I new by reputation long before he got in trouble so I really enjoyeed the book.

good read, was easy to stay with. fascinating to see how everythign was held together with duct tape and chicken wire.interesting view of how the mighty can fall

Bruce McNall's story was one that was very interesting to me as I was a Kings season ticket holder during his years owning the Kings.Story was well written. It is a must read for fans of Wayne Gretsky coming to the Kings.

Just as he did in making LA Kings games a wonderfully popular attraction for hockey fans, McNall is providing heaps of fun for us in this memoir of his rise and fall. When watching a magician at work, we know the purpose is entertainment, rather than truth-telling; so, too, this volume is not a true soul-bearing confessional that reveals the internal demons that led McNall to a life of huge financial crimes. His deepest confession -- that he simply wanted to be liked too much -- clearly is a superficial revelation, but we know that McCall intends here to get us to like him (not to really understand him); although a different kind of book that truly exposed the dark side of his being would have been an important contribution, McCall instead succeeds in providing us here a thoroughly enjoyable few hours attending to his breezy recounting of his many colorful, if unlawful, achievements and a summary recounting of how they inevitably led to a 5-year detour behind bars. The worlds he traversed -- trading rare coins, breeding and racing thoroughbred horses, feature-film-making, and building winning sports franchises-- provide enough entertaining vignettes for many books (and many lives!), and we can be thankful that he crammed so much writing into such a manageable and readable volume.

The author, Bruce McNall, was no doubt a flawed individual who got swept up in some schemes that would ultimately send him to prison; yet he had a great deal of charisma which oozes through the pages of his book. This is a guy who certainly knew how to get people to buy into whatever it was he was "selling" at the time, and his perspective on his wild ride into the craziness of big business, professional sports, and of course, Tinsletown, make for an extraordinary read.Although his antics were a bit devious at times, McNall provided a fascinating look into the events that shaped his destiny, and really gives anyone a lesson into how fleeting fame and fortune can be when mixed with the volatile world of money, power and influence. That's a dangerous combination and should be handled with extreme care. McNall handled it with great abandon, but his honesty in revealing his flawed approach to certain aspects of life made for quite a compelling narrative.

Bruce McNall is a man who gained and lost a substantial fortune. How could a book detailing his experience not be entertaining? His memoir is at its most interesting as he is ascending from humble beginings to a place of wealth and affluence. It's a familiar story, but McNall's tale has a freshness to it. Somehow a coin dealer's evolution into a sports mogule is novel.Oddly, the book loses momentum when the author is shuffled off to jail. I doubt anyone picked up Bruce McNall's biography to catch a glimpse inside prison life, but his descripion of it is painstaking.Still, the man is a likable figure, and his story is an enjoyable one.

I chose this rating because it is a fantastic work and portrays the use and wackiness of the Double Cross system with a wealth of sources. The book revolves around 5-6 different spies, keeping the text from going stagnant. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys World War II, especially in things that may be considered forgotten details, or someone who enjoys learning about the War but not individual troop movements. The tone is upbeat, often humorous, and does not delve into bore. I enjoyed that the spotlight shone on the figures that Macintyre chose, whether they played into Operation Bodyguard or not. While many agents were involved, those brought to the center by Macintyre truly enrich the stories involved.

This is not a novel. Though there are a few James-Bondish characteristics to a couple of the principles, it's more of dry re-telling of "double-agent" realities from WWII, at least those being 'run' by British Secret Service, primarily in continental Europe (and a few in Russia). This is not to say boring, far from it. I was totally compelled to keep reading it, once i started. A lot of things are bought up here that you probably never heard before, such as the source of the term "Double Cross".Though this brand of espionage apparently served the Allies quite well, one of the main tensions in the book is how the whole program was often hanging by the thread of a spider-web. Plus, not everyone in British secret service agreed that they should be doing this or that it could possibly work at all, without a tremendous blowup and backlash.Very Informative.- Excellent book!

Ben MacIntire's DOUBLECROSS is a dazzling look at the secret war, "the bodyguard of lies", that kept the Germans confused and off-balance in the run-up to D-Day. It is full of characters that would be too implausible in fiction: the bisexual Peruvian girl who partied through Paris, a Polish ex-fighter pilot, a crazy Frenchwoman obsessed with her lapdog, and the key player, a Spanish chicken farmer who used to run a one-star hotel in Madrid. The Germans thought they were all valuable spies embedded in Britain, and all were turned by MI5 and played as double agents.MacIntire does a terrific job with this material. At times you will be amazed at the denseness of the penny pinching British. MI5's refusal to bring a small dog into the country for a valuable double agent because such an action would violate the quarantine laws is a decision that will leave the reader gasping! Angry beyond words, the woman almost betrayed the entire operation. At times like that, the spymasters look like devious, miserable little men. This book should be read before AGENT GARBO by Stephen Talty, which expands on the career of Juan Pujol, Agent Garbo, the Spanish chicken-farming genius, giving much more detail of the role he played in orchestrating German confusion. Talty's book is also terrific. Both books wonderful additions to WWII spy literature.

This is Ben Macintyre's last book in what is stated to be his trilogy of WWII non-fiction British spy books (the other two being Operation Mincemeat and Agent ZigZag). Having read them all I would have to say this is his most ambitious and epic in scope although the other books are both well worth your attention. What we have here is the story of how Britain's MI5 controlled every single German spy in England with emphasis on the five most important double agents in operation "Fortitude". In fact MI5 controlled more spies than were actually alive as they created whole fictional networks of German spies. All of this lead to the greatest deception of WWII and perhaps changed history but no doubt saved countless lives during the D-Day landings on Normandy. The rhythm of Macintyre's narrative takes some getting use too as he presents five individual spies and their stories and it takes a while to introduce them , their backgrounds, and both German and British handlers.. But take it in stride because as you become familiar with each individual and their back stories I promise you that the suspense builds and your interest in each individual case and fate increases. The last chapter is a great epilogue that brings each significant character's (spies, MI5 handlers, and Germans) post war lives to light. Just one example: One of the spies, who before the war was a chicken hating Spanish chicken farmer living outside Barcelona, won the Iron Cross from the Germans... AFTER D-Day so total was his act of deception. If I have a complaint about the book... it would be that there is material here for several books (and several movies). But no doubt about it this is a history that is a very entertaining well researched true life story. And a tribute to those who participated in the deception, lies, immorality, friendships, ideology, loyalty, love and survival that ultimately resulted in the success of Operation Fortitude. Your understanding of the D-Day landings will never be complete without learning of a Serbian playboy, a Polish fighter pilot, a bi-sexual Peruvian party girl, a Frenchwoman who cared more for her dog than the mission's success, and of course that chicken farmer who ended up winning the Iron Cross.

Ben Macintyre is the master of spy non-fiction. This is another brilliant, fascinating and dramatic book. I knew that there had been many efforts to deceive the Germans about D-Day but I had not realized how important the role of double agents was--even to the point of Hitler reading reports from one such double agent personally. M15 seems to have been much better at spying that the CIA despite some bad lapses due to Communist infiltrators. This is one of my two favorite Macintyre books, the other being The Spy and the Traitor.
