I have to say I love this book. I'm a 59 year old, working physicist and never once understood how weather works - this answered all my basic questions. I bought it used originally, so I wasn't able to use the online videos and animations - so I'm buying it again new in order to do that. I've read several other of the "big name" books on such things, having to do with numerical climate modelling, weather and climate, etc., but this one takes an integrated approach, avoiding many complex equations, so you can see the entire forest and not get lost in all the equations of this complex subject. It does tell you when it's skipping over something - so it's a great intro as well as add-on to graduate-level texts.

The material in the book scanning through reminded me of high school biology textbooks except in an open form to place inside of a binder. The vocabulary words are bolded, not highlighted. Overall the content appears to be easy to understand which will be great as I transition to college. I look foreword to indulging in this book.

Was this book edited? There are so many errors — information on one page conflicts with info in a box on the next; the beginning of chapter two repeats a paragraph and fails to complete the next one. And I'm just beginning chapter two. There's clearly a problem — either the authors failed to review the proofs, or the editor fell asleep on the job.

About the Author
Jordy Rosenberg is a transgender writer and scholar. He is an associate professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he teaches eighteenth-century literature and gender and sexuality studies. He has received fellowships and awards from the Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation, the Ahmanson Foundation/J. Paul Getty Trust, the UCLA Center for 17th- and 18th-Century Studies, the Society for the Humanities at Cornell University, and the Clarion Foundation’s Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers’ Workshop. He is the author of a scholarly monograph, Critical Enthusiasm: Capital Accumulation and the Transformation of Religious Passion. He lives in New York City and Northampton, Massachusetts. Confessions of the Fox is his first novel.

Ever read something that you suspect was over-praised and wonder what all the fuss was about?This book was a chore to get through. I started it with high hopes--a postmodern textual apparatus with allusive false citations and a frame story (and expanding stories within stories in the footnotes!)--purporting to be major reimagination of interesting issues in gender and social discourse. What I found was a self-absorbed text, more in-jokey than genuinely witty, with cardboard characters, unbelievable action, unclear plot and a tone and style not unlike a contemporary pulp novel, albeit with faky "period-specific" Capitalizations plac'd about with Diverse Sundry Apostrophes insert'd. I was unconvinced.Note also that the major preoccupation of the main character, toward which his thoughts tend with irritating and obsessive frequency, is cunnilingus: this is so often, so insistently described with an outright pornographic intensity that I found it a major distraction. As are those post-modern footnotes; how many times do we need to follow the supertext to know that the asterisk is going to be followed only by the words 'penis' or 'pussy?'The frame story, about a modern annotator of the text facing silly and wholly predictable, albeit unbelievable, 'educational reforms' (a Dean of Surveillance whose office is accommodated in a purged campus library, a company called Militia.edu whose employees' cars are more expensive than the narrator's) is described at about the level of situation comedy. It's hard to see what we're supposed to identify with in so facile a construction. The jokes are too broad, too trite, and fail to elicit sympathy.In the end, I found this book easy and trashy: the ambitions of this text, which are considerable and laudable, require a much more weighty and carefully-constructed treatment. A denser text, more richly and believably described and narrated, with characters serving as better than plot devices, would have better served the important issues the book ostensibly discusses. As it stands, this reads like an in-joke for the Academy, and much the praise it's garnered, I suspect, is motivated by critical politics. I wish it were otherwise.
A recently jilted, sad sack gender studies professor discovers an antique manuscript which appears to tell a true, insider’s account of the life of the notorious early 18th century thief and jail breaker Jack Sheppard (a real-life hero of the underclass fictionalized as MacHeath in “The Beggar’s Opera†and later as Mack the Knife in Brecht’s “Threepennyâ€). “Confessions of the Fox†is that manuscript, coupled with the numerous, digressive footnotes provided by the professor.A brief interjection is warranted here (much in the way the endearing Professor Voth frequently interjects through footnotes), to say that at face value this is an outrageously clever and entertaining book. The fact that Jack is reimagined as a trans man (an attribute he shares with Professor Voth), and non-white queers populate this gorgeous narrative is remarkable. Additionally, this is the first work of contemporary mainstream fiction that I can recall by an openly trans author. To my mind that makes it a small miracle.Left alone, historical accounts and classic literature from Chaucer through Dickens and beyond, would have us believe that London has always been exclusively populated by cis white heterosexuals. But it’s always been a very diverse city, and its chroniclers might have noticed had they focused their gaze beyond their white Anglo-Saxon noses.This is a story about rebellion; Jack and his moll Bess (reimagined as a South Asian) contend with the plague and an encroaching police state as they conspire to defeat their oppressors; meanwhile, in the parallel narrative, Professor Voth takes increasingly extreme measures to foil repugnant university administrators and publishers intent on commandeering his work, all while preserving and annotating Jack’s tale.Trans people are born inhabiting the wrong body, and corrective surgery (such as the gruesome procedure Jack undergoes without anesthesia) is a solution. Likewise, corrective surgery on history sets past wrongs right. It is a radical act; painful and difficult but necessary.This is a touching, funny, erotic, magical, empowering book. Rosenberg fires on all cylinders. Appreciators of intriguing, well-told fiction will be rewarded. The closing passage soars with a lyricism and poetry I haven’t encountered outside of Marquez.But more importantly, it’s a gift to trans, intersex, queer, dispossessed folks of every stripe. It fairly shouts “you are here and you always were; you matter and you mattered.â€
Like others have written, this isn't an easy book to describe. It's one of the most brilliant and hilarious satires of higher education since Jane Smiley's Moo. It's one of the best thief/sex worker/London street kids books since Dickens. It's beautifully gender-queer. And then there's the use of footnotes, which can only be described as snort-inducingly fantastic. I sincerely hope Rosenberg makes enough from the royalties to flick spit wads at the VP of Success Innovation and retire from teaching to write many, many more books like this one. Or not. I feel sure he can come up with some other way to dazzle and surprise readers.
I thought this was just up my alley: historical novel; gender fluid but, man, this was way too obtuse for me! Tried to follow, gave up on counterpart footnotes and now am giving up on the whole mess. Have a fragil hold on what the plot was on the historical portion and none on the modern day footnote thread. Too many books to read to suffer through another page.
It’s my deep pleasure to have lived long enough to read a beautifully crafted fictional work that within its narrative depicts so many of my own identities, histories, values, and communities. Those of us who grow up and live with few or no reflections of ourselves in mainstream art and media get used to a kind of invisibility. This work is an emergence. It’s shocking in its tenderness. I want to reach back in time and hand it to my childhood self. An old loop is closed in this healing.

It never occurred to me that an experienced cook would need a book to figure out how to cook a pizza on a grill, but Ms Karmel and Mr. Blumer report that their earlier book was a great success. Good for them. But why the expansion? The Internet, including Weber grill company's own site, has loads of recipes for pizza on the grill so spending money on a book seems extravagant. The recipes in this book sound good, and their exploration of gluten-free crusts is useful, but there are plenty of free resources for similar information.I received a review copy of Pizza on the Grill: 100 Feisty Fire-Roasted Recipes for Pizza & More by Elizabeth Karmel and Bob Blumer (Taunton) through NetGalley.com.
With "Pizza on the Grill" Elizabeth Karmel and Bob Blumer have written a gem of a cookbook. Generally I stay away from ultra-specific cookbooks, but a friend of mine showed me this and after leafing through it I had to buy my own copy. In short this is a great little book for every pizza lover and includes not only conventional fare (e.g. "All-American Pepperoni Pizza,") but an amazing assortment of new and delicious pizzas including breakfast and dessert pizzas.Obviously this is a book about grilling pizzas, and despite being an initial skeptic, I no longer am. These pizzas are great. The authors explain how to optimize everything in the cooking process from the grill settings to the pizza dough itself. And fear not, traditionalists: you can make these in an oven, too. The toppings run the gamut, but some of the most unconventional pizzas are the best (be sure to check out "Caramelized Pear and Roast Walnut Pizza," "Green Eggs and Ham Pizza," "Spanish Fly Pizza," and "Kung Pao Cashew Chicken Pizza" for starters.) Of course every cookbook has some recipes that aren't as captivating for any one person (I wasn't a fan of "Blistered Corn, Asparagus, and Pesto Pizza" for instance, though it's sure to be a favorite of someone else.) What amazed me was how good the overwhelming majority of these recipes are. Feel free to experiment: this collection gives you countless great ideas and the modifications available to suit individual tastes are boundless.For entertaining or a simple dinner for friends and family, this is a great book and I recommend you give it a try.
One of the things I dislike about how-to books and motivational guides (even the Dummies books) is that they have long, boring introductions and explanations of "How This Book Works" or "Why We Wrote This Book" before they get to the point and tell you how-to or motivate you. This book is no exception, but at least the intros are short and you're sent to the grill without too much delay. On the Kindle edition, on which this review is based, the authors provide handy links to take you right to the section you need depending on your experience and skill level. The recipes are great and the techniques solid; I grilled my first pizzas only after reading this book and the results were amazing.
This is one of my favorite cookbooks. It’s really SO fabulous and everyone fell in love with everything I made. Illustrations and instructions are beautiful and easy to follow. You don’t have to put the pizza on the grill but I’m my opinion it’s More fun... Not just pizza recipes - which I thought was fun - there’s a section in the back for some exciting different appetizers and things. The House seasoning and infused oil recipes in the back go great with Eeeveryttthhhiiinnngg. I totally recommend this book. My pictures here include the Clams Casino Pizza, Steak and Bleu Cheese, Lobster Pizza and then the most fantastic pepperoni pizza I’ve ever had. Each recipe comes with drink pairings, cool substitutions, and side notes. Best crusts and sauces. I could go on and on! You should own it.
This book is a work of love by people who love pizza. Great photos an inspired collection of recipes. I have made 100's of pizzas, same old stuff, got boring and predictable. This book is beyond so called gourmet books this is lifestyle cooking, this can be a center piece activity at a small gathering, it could be a life changer. You will never be able to look at any pizza the same way again. This is not game day pizza for the hordes, these pizzas have complexity and textures you never will see in commercial efforts. Yet with all that said, these are NOT snobs, they freely admit they use dough from many places to take 90% of the work out of it and save a ton of time. To me the dough is where the skill and art meet. But still these instructions are easy to follow and give exciting results, Keep your eye on the grill and do not leave for ANY reason, turn the cellphone OFF and step back in time and watch fire do its magic to an American icon.
