Prehistoric mammals are not as fascinating to the public as dinosaurs, and we see many fewer popular books covering the topic. Two earlier attempts by professional paleontologists to cover the whole class that stick in my mind are “The Rise of the Mammals†by Michael Benton (1991) and “National Geographic Prehistoric Mammals†by Alan Turner (2004). The latter is memorable because it is illustrated by Mauricio Anton, whose work I greatly admire. In this tradition, but obviously much more up to date, is a new book “The Princeton Field Guide to Prehistoric Mammals†by Donald Prothero. Prothero works at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. He has published a few dozen books on a diversity of biological topics (crytozoology, global warming, the fossil evidence for evolution, etc.).Just a few weeks ago I reviewed “The Princeton Field Guide to Dinosaurs (Second Edition)â€. This is an illustrated encyclopedia of individual dinosaur species, organized by phylogeny, plus some introductory material. I expected “The Princeton Field Guide to Prehistoric Mammals†to have a similar format. However, as the author explains in the Preface, while there are only several hundred valid dinosaur species, there are several thousand species of living mammals at least a few thousand extinct ones. So TPFGTPM is organized to highlight 15 mammal families, each in its separate chapter, with some of the more important genera emphasized. Aside from the details specific families, there are introductory chapters that include the synapsids (often called “mammal-like reptilesâ€) and mesozoic mammals (who were neither marsupials nor placental mammals). There is a closing chapter on mammal evolution and extinction.As mentioned above, the organization of the mammal families in this book is done phylogenetically. Some phylogenetic information is gotten by comparing the skeletal anatomy of the mammals (much as is done with dinosaurs), but since relatives of some extinct mammals are still alive, we can also compare DNA sequences. In some cases the anatomic and genetic information lead to different conclusions. Two interesting examples: There is a group of mammals called the Afrotheria, which have a common genetic signature, but do not resemble each other in any significant way: elephants, manatees, hyraxes, and elephant shrews. There is a genetic link between whales and hippos that shows they are more closely related to each other than to other artiodactyls (even-toed hoofed mammals). One consequence is that other artiodactyls once thought to be ancestral to whales, e.g. the wolf-like mesonychids, acquired some of their whale-like anatomical features through convergence.On that topic, many examples in TPFGTPM show that convergent evolution among mammal groups is extremely common, and the overall body form of mammals is dictated more by their “job†than by their ancestry. For example, there are many versions of the “wolf†(by which we mean a mid-sized pursuit predator) besides the canine version we have today. Most of us know about the “thalacyine (marsupial) wolf†which has been extinct only for decades. Not too many people are aware of the above-mentioned mesonychids (Paleocene through Eocene), which are artiodactyls. They strike us as very strange because there are no extant hoofed predators. There are also the “bear dogs†(Oligocene to Miocene) and creodonts (Eocene to Miocene). The same thing could be said about “lionsâ€, “cowsâ€, and “flying squirrels.â€One of the most interesting discussions in TPFGTPM is about extinct families that are poorly organized even now. One example is the uintatheres, the rhino- to elephant-sized herbivorous mammals with large tusks and large knobs on their heads. Much of the confusion in this group was brought about circa 1872 by the 19th Century rival paleontologists Edward Drinker Cope and O. C. Marsh. Each of these men named a large number of species in this group, sometimes naming the same animal twice, sometimes giving the different animals the same name, and always ignoring the names created by his rival. While dozens of names were proposed, a hundred years later only a handful are recognized as valid. Even now, though, it is not clear that all animals assigned to the uintatheres are actually related.TPFGTPM is very heavily illustrated, averaging one illustration per page. There are photographs of fossils, clear diagrams (most of which show phylogenetic relationships), and life restorations. The signature type of illustration for this book is the silhouette of a man surrounded by restorations of one to a dozen species in the specific family under discussion. Most of the life restorations are by Mary Persis Williams, who is a well-known scientific illustrator and blogger.In most book reviews I usually make a comment about the “sweet spot†for popular books on paleontology (or science in general). I hope a book will present enough technical material to make it interesting for a knowledgable amateur like myself, but not assume I am already aware of fiddly anatomical terms. Also, the more unfamiliar material the better. In TPFGTPM I encountered many families of fossil mammals I had never heard of before. TPFGTPM shows that prehistoric mammals are just as weird and fascinating as dinosaurs, and you should have it in your library.
I can see why other reviewers were critical of Mary Williams art,as it certainly was a huge waste of potential. If Mauricio Anton,or Peter Schouten illustrated this book it would be worth it's weight in gold. However the illustrations are by no means terrible,with the only reason for complaint being that they aren't photorealistic like the work of the other two artists I mentioned. Nevertheless,as I stated in the headline there's plenty of the latest discoveries and lots of great information. I really enjoyed it,and highly recommend this book to anyone interested in ancient mammals.
Mammals are one of the most interesting groups of vertebrates, with a very long history, with the first proto-mammals living towards end of Paleozoic. This book written for an authority show us a wonderful world of beasts many of them extinct but spectacular as dinosaurs. Many of the mammal lineages are treated and pictured with adequate artist renderings. A book for anyone interested in the evolution of animals in all biogeographic realms.

This is comprehensive, well organized and easy to read. The drawings are helpful, but not a fanciful as in some other publications.

This was an interesting read from an historical perspective, but also as a character study and just a plain-old-fun read. I had no idea that anyone stood up to the inquisition and managed to survive (at least for a while). The precision with which the church set out to find heretics and witches, and their concern for following strict procedures is almost funny when you consider that they were trying to suppress free thought. This is portrayed as a true account of historical events and that makes it all the more intriguing. A must read for people interested in the subject matter but an entertaining read for anyone who just likes great story telling. It kind of reminds me of Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose. It's not a mystery but the tone is similar.
I had to read this for a history class I was taking. I loved the title... which is explained in the book. I have always been interested in the Reformation... I always wondered was it just about religion or was it a social movement. For me the storyWas more social status, who had power and who didn't. Poor Menocchio was a victim of being to smart for his own good.
This was the first ground breaking micro history ever written and still stands the test of time. my european history prof used it at TTU lubbock last semester. I kept it because i loved it so much. this fall (2016) another european history professor will use it again and i can't wait to see what more there is to learn from it. :O)

It is a rigorous piece of research interpreted creatively in the late 60's but totally vital today. The writing is vibrant.
While I would not describe it as a page turner, I found the book to be enlightening on the effects of wealthy class culture has on the popular culture of the middle and lower classes. Over all this particular edition is good quality and a great book for academic use.
Ginzburg writes an excellent microhistory, however it drags a bit when Ginzburg addresses the trials and works that took place. More focus on the ideology of the character than the character himself.
This book deals with a subject deeper than religion. It deals with conscience, the need of a man to tell his truth to the world, something much needed nowadays. He knew he was going to get a death sentence, but he did not betrayed himself. All the power to Menocchio!

About the Author
Osamu Tezuka (1928-89) is the godfather of Japanese manga comics. He originally intended to become a doctor and earned his degree before turning to what was then a medium for children. His many early masterpieces include the series known in the U.S. as Astro Boy. Bottom Line First Osamu’s Tezuka’s Buddha (book 2), THE Four Encounters, Paperback editionOn the chance you are coming to these 8 book series via book two, this is not a religious teaching text. This is a lax graphic novelization of a history. So far not much on the religion of the young Prince Siddhartha, the man who will with enlightenment become Buddha, founder of Buddhism. The introduction of highly anachronistic terms is more noticeable and less excusable than was present in book one. Overall I found the story less compelling and with the introduction of only a few new characters, the remaining older characters were not handled in such a way as to create more interest. The major new character is the Prince and there is much about him to capture the reader’s imagination. Recommendation, Book 2 has all the artwork that made w Book 1 beautiful. Book I was the better of the two books and on that basis and for the reader wanting the continuity of storyline I am recommending this installment. I will be getting book 3 and hope that this one is the bridge to better things.At the end of Book one I had been deeply effected by the ending and very interested in the future story line. In short, eager for book 2. The Four Encounters Delivered as a work of visual art. Country scenes are beautiful and the level of detail in the over-all artistry is more than value for the cost. Tezuka is considered an originator of Magna. However many the other claimants; Tezuka and his team are artists. Given casual nudity and innumerable perky ice cream scoop breasted the women, there is little here that is aimed to prurient interests or even mildly erotic.The amount of violence remains high even if human costs are on a different scale. No mass deaths by locusts, but famine and individual deaths and suffering continue. Historically and thematically appropriate. For example, few too many dear are killed.My personal bottom line is that Book 1 left me caring about these people. My overall letdown with book 2 will not keep me from reading book 3.
Serious philosophy in graphic novels can be entertaining and fun! It is humorous and light-hearted yet serious and gripping in this eight-volume set of graphic novels by Osamu Tezuka. Tezuka is referred to as the father of manga, or Japanese comics. We are not fans of manga, but these graphics novels/comics are beautifully done. The books are a wonderful way to introduce the life of Buddha and his path to peace and meditation to young people who shrink from these ideas. The message and wisdom is timeless.The novels take the reader from Buddha's birth to his enlightenment and death. Fictional characters that spout contemporary statements add to the fun. They in no way diminish the serious issues of caste, war, poverty, and slavery. The characters are incredibly human and likeable. Women, though, are scantily clothed and many readers may feel that Tezuka is irreverent in his approach. If you can get past that initial reaction, you may be well rewarded.As these are graphic novels/comics, the tone is not as respectful as religious books. We found this approach of making Buddha and all the other characters so human in every way rather appealing. If the Buddha could do this, there is hope for all of us! In comic form, the text has to be succinct and precise. We get the message in a few sentences, with the drawings often conveying more than words.We found these beautifully bound novels (the spines line up to show the aging faces of Buddha through his lifetime) riveting and hope you enjoy them as well. This is a delightfully different way of coming to know the Buddha. You may find yourself reading these novels over and over again!
Great book, but the kindle edition does not work. Literally all that opens is the title page, book cover, and table of contents. It's a real shame, because I was looking forward to re-reading. Not only does it NOT WORK, returning/refunding it is a huge pain. Don't buy for Kindle, definitely buy on paper.

More of the story of young Sidhartha struggling with his posh prince place in a strongly caste system, and his fear of death and suffering. An 'enlightened' Sidartha fights against the caste system, which is paramount to treason, and slowly learns his true place in all things.
I picked up one of these books at our local library and fell in love with the story. After purchasing the complete set, I am glad I went into the library that day.
I have read the Japanese version of this and bought English sets for my boyfriend.We are super happy, everybody should have a set in their house.
This is an incredible series from an incredible author!I would encourage anyone who is interested in learning about Buddha in a serious but fun way to read this series.

Lisa Robertson really gets it here, her writing about writing, writing about thinking. It's beautiful. I felt like I was inside of her brain when I read this book. There are even some essays that have website links so that you can listen to soundscapes while you read them. This made the reading feel even more immersive and beautiful.The book arrived to me in perfect condition. The cover is a lovely texture -- heavy, matte, almost like watecolour paper. The inner pages themselves also have a great texture to them. This book really feels like it was also considered as an object, to be felt. I felt the book through my fingers but also in my mind, reading Robertson's wonderful thoughts.
This book is blowing my mind and making me rethink and question many topics, including things like what it means to be a reader and have a reading experience.
