Matthew Restall's "Seven Myths of the Spanish Conquest" is an illuminating introduction to the Conquest of the Americas. The value of Restall's book is that it provides a broad overview of the facts, circumstances and personalities of the Conquest while diving deeper into particular "myths" around which Restall organizes his book.Although he calls his chapters "myths," it isn't clear to me that these are myths in the sense that they are erroneous things that people think about when they think of the Spanish Conquest. A lot of the myths are things that we don't normally think about at all, albeit if pushed to take a position, we might adopt the "mythicist" position sketched by Restall. For example, not all conquistadors were white, some were Africans who transitioned from slave to successful conquistadors while enslaved. This is a fascinating bit of history, particularly fascinating in the idea that a person from a sub-Saharan African tribe could make his way successfully into a completely alien culture. Is there a myth that all Conquistadors were white? I suspect that the answer is that most people just haven't thought about the subject.What we get from Restall's book is that the Conquistadors, generally acting as entrepreneurial free companies with only the most limited backing of their sovereign, had perfected a technique of conquest, which basically involved descending on the next likely looking territory, enlisting native allies, capturing the native leader and massacring natives where necessary. The strategy worked like gang-busters, particularly when aided along by the introduction of European diseases that killed off 90% of the native population.To the natives, it must have looked like the end of the world.Restall explores this strategy by a series of chapters addressing his "myths." In chapter one, Restall points out that it was not a "handful of adventurers" that conquered the Americas. It was a handful of adventurers backed by huge numbers of native allies. In chapter two, Restall points out that the conquistadors were not armies of the King. They were usually scratch troops put together on the spot of whoever was feeling like making a fortune. In chapter three, Restall introduces the reader to the African slaves who made up a substantial portion of the Spanish forces. In chapter four, Restall explains the idea of the completion of the Conquest was overstated; there were free Mayan groups in the Yucatan into the Twentieth Century. Chapter five discusses the asymmetry of communication. The Spanish were fortunate to find native speakers who could communicate with the Spanish. Thus, Cortez spoke to a shipwrecked Spaniard who spoke a Mayan language, who in turn spoke to Malinche - the Aztec princess who became Cortez' mistress - who could speak to the Aztecs. The Aztecs and other natives did not have that kind of access to the intelligence that knowing the other's language provided. In chapter six, Restall disputes the myth that the Indians were totally and utterly destroyed by the Conquest. The seventh chapter discusses why there should be such mythic understandings of the Conquest, i.e., outmanned adventurers conquering mighty civilizations by sheer cultural superiority.This is a good book for those who are looking for an introduction to the subject. I read this book while listening to the Teaching Company lecture series on the Conquest of the Americas. I heartily recommend that combination as a way getting immersed in this important but often forgotten studied bit of history.

Tom Lyons does it again in his 3rd installment of the "Living with Bigfoot" series with "Alterior Motives"! the escalation of encounters, coupled with the continuing twists and turns had me zipping through this book until i finished it in less than an hour! I cant wait for the next book to read about the lady in the straw hat, the neighbours, and most of all, the encounters! The more the story unfolds, the more questons there to be answered. as with the 2 previous books, ive recommended "Alterior Motives' to my Sasquath enthusiast friends!
Wow! What a great book! I’m a believer as well. I was camping with my family at Big Lake in Arizona; we experienced hearing strange yells, and then later in our tent, growling right against our tent! It scared the crap out of me and I really thought I would not survive the night! Well, I woke up in the morning alive! I will never forget that experience! Can’t wait for the next book!
I do enjoy this saga very much....but....how long will I need to keep paying $3.00 for this continuing story?
When I first started this series wasn't sure but now I can't keep from waiting for the next book to come out. They are short and put all together it would be a plus-but will just keep up with them as the are available. Thanks Mr. Lyons.

Karen Hall, soprano, is a voice teacher, author, editor, and researcher who holds degrees in vocal performance and a doctorate in education from Columbia University, Teachers College. A versatile performer, Dr. Hall has performed in opera, operetta, concert, oratorio, recital, chamber music, and music theatre throughout the United States and Europe. She is a five-time Metropolitan Opera Regional Finalist and has been recognized by the College Music Society, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and the Voice Symposium for her research on music theater singing. She also serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Singing, the research publication of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.Scott McCoy is Professor of Voice and Pedagogy at The Ohio State University and director of the Helen Swank Voice Teaching and Research Lab. Wendy LeBorgne is the voice pathologist, singing voice specialist, and director of the Blaine Block Institute for Voice Analysis and Rehabilitation (Dayton, OH), and The Professional Voice Center of Greater Cincinnati (Cincinnati, OH).

A little disappointed but not all that surprised that this book is long on the why's and what's and short on the how. Vocal pedants are terrified of talking about vocal technique and there is virtually none in this book. What it does have is tons of repetition and and endless discussion twenty different ways of what the musical theatre voice sounds like. I know what a musical theatre voice sounds like. It's hard to believe this book was intended for professionals. The closest she ever gets to discussing technique is giving a list of all the well known people who teach it and what their method is called.I think I read about the history of music theatre three times in the first half.Also, none of the register exercises mentioned are actually on the NATS website.
A much-needed and excellent resource for voice teachers and singers!

I'm glad Brandon wrote this book. I've watched Lucky Dog for the past two years and tried to incorporate (from watching) the common commands Brandon does on his show into training my dog. I would have loved to have had this book when I got the dog, but I'll use his techniques to reinforce the commands. I would recommend this book to every dog owner and especially first time fur baby owners. Having watched his show, I have great respect for Brandon's mission and his training methods.
I love the show and so I bought the book. The book has lots of stories about real dogs he's trained over the years and it goes into great detail about training methods. Gives a lot of options depending on whether you have a small dog or large dog, which is a plus and not something I'd seen in other dog training info. It is a lot of reading. It's not just a simple picture book with brief instructions. He goes into great detail, which is good, but it does require a lot of reading time to get thru.My biggest complaint is that most of his sollutions require the purchase of some kind of dog training equipment. Everything from a clicker, to a shake can, to a leading lure, to certain types of collars, harnesses and leashes. Frankly, I just want to train my puppy in basic commands and do away with a few annoying bad habits (jumping, and biting hands) I don't want to have to gear up like a professional dog trainer and buy a bunch of stuff that I won't need in a few weeks time. If I have to buy all this gear to properly train my dog, I will just enroll him for professional dog training and be done with it.So keep in mind, these techniques are good and will no doubt work, IF you have the time, the commitment and are willing to invest in training equipment.
It Works! We watch the television show, Lucky Dog, and have used some of the training tips with our dog. After reading the book, which provided much more information and background stories, we have made much-needed headway with our dog's out-of-control barking. I would be driven to distraction when the dog would bark at visitors or noises. Now, I understand that barking is in his DNA and I can stop him from barking, but he will always bark. It took an enormous weight off my shoulders; I am a responsible dog owner and can do what is best for the dog. The book is interesting and moves right along. Having watched most dog related TV shows, this book has taught me that I don't need the trainer in my house to do the training as I formerly believed . I can do it myself which is great for the dog and my ego as well!
I bought this book because my 14 week old golden retriever puppy was stressing me out! I had done a lot of researching online for training techniques and honestly, nothing was really working. So i researched books for training dogs and came across Lucky Dog Lessons. I had never seen the show before or heard of it. But decided to buy it based off the massive amounts of five star reviews. The book is in hardback right now, so was a little more pricier. But absolutely worth the price as it really does work. One major problem with my dog is not knowing the 'NO' command. I read this section on it and he gives step by step training for it. I practiced it with my dog, i'm literally on day one working on this, and it's already working. My dog is NOT chill and i was doubtful she'd be able to control herself. But it didnt take long for her to stop going for the treat immediately. She is learning it quick! Yes, i was skeptical at how simple the training step was... but it worked!! Can't wait to dig through the rest of the book and work on his other commands. My little girl and i are bonding more and more, thanks to this book. I just started his training this morning, 5/5/18, and i already feel less stressed out and angry.
I chose this book in the beginning because we have a six month old Yellow Lab named Stella. We are older and she is a bundle of energy. We were beginning to think that we were in over our heads and then we found Brandon McMillan and he taught us how to really enjoy her by training her to be a well-mannered puppy. It's been a lot of work , both on Stella's part and ours but Brandon made it so down to earth and easy to understand. His love for dogs is apparent on every page of this book. I loved this book!!
This book is well written, really easy to read and has a lot of great insight into different dogs' personalities and behavior. Unfortunately, I have not read the whole book, because my Husky took a special interest in it, before I had a chance to finish it. I will be getting a replacement, and hopefully I'll get to the chewing section in time :)
Excellent book!! I have read several dog / puppy training books in the last few months. This is by far one of my favorites! Brandon's Lucky Dog Lessons provides a new approach and insight to training your fur baby whether its a 5 pound lap dog to a 120 pound beast of slobber! Very well written and perfect for anyone, beginner or well experienced! The little inserted stories of dogs he has trained are a little treat for every reader!
This book is simple to follow and interesting. Currently using the techniques with our rescue puppy and it is working like a charm. The examples of the shelter dogs Brandon has worked with were relevant to the techniques shared. The writing style is specific yet humor is injected were appropriate. If you watch Lucky Dog and admire Brandon's easy-going style in training dogs, this book is for you. His tips on patience, tone, etc are extremely useful.
This is a really well written book. I love the rescue stories and the training that went along with the rescue. Would recommend to anyone who loves, but can't necessarily control their "fur babies".
