John S. March, MD, is Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center. A widely published author of books for professionals, including OCD in Children and Adolescents, his research defines the state of the art for treatment of young people with OCD and other anxiety and mood disorders. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. March is active in the teaching and training of mental health professionals. Recently, he served as one of the principal investigators of a National Institute of Mental Health-funded project that compared ways to help kids and teens beat OCD. This book was recommended to me by my son's therapist. It is an accessible approach to dealing with OCD using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.. My son and I are only on step 1 right now, so I can't speak to the program's ultimate efficacy for us, but my son liked the sound of the program and feels hopeful that it can help him manage or eliminate OCD. I do wish the book came with some companion online resources, like the OCD maps and charts featured in the book. My son, who is 10, particularly liked the case studies and testimonials by other kids. I think they helped him feel more normal. I was initially taken aback by the recommended personification of OCD, and I am still not crazy about the suggestion to give it a nickname. The point is to externalize it, and this does seem effective for my son.
This book was recommended to me/my daughter to read to help with OCD thoughts. I read it, but think it's a bit above her head. I have been able to explain a few of the basic concepts but I'd recommend for 8+. It's broken down into 12 (I believe) sections.
This was too much reading for my 14 year old and she is an advanced reader. I read it before her and that is actually how I felt. Also, this book actually put ideas into her head that were not there before. Things that she did not have issues with before were now a potential problem. This was recommended to me, however, I would NOT recommend this book for a 13/14 year old with OCD. Self help is difficult as it is and this book did not help.
If someone read this book to my husband when he was a kid, his life would be so different now, instead he is living with the severest OCD. If u suspect that ur child has OCD, please read this book!!!!!! If u are an adult with OCD, please read this book!!!! It is better than the best therapy u can ever get.
This was an excellent resource, although the reading level is geared towards older teens and adults. Young teens will definitely need guidance while reading it.Here is what I liked about it:1. It very practically and accurately explained what it was like to live with OCD. The explanations and examples will help readers understand the condition.2. OCD is portrayed in a manner that does NOT make you feel as though you are strange or weird.3. The book explained how there are times when stressors can exacerbate OCD, and times when it is easier to deal with it. It also shows how to identify what is OCD and what isn't.4. If you have ever felt as though you are controlled by OCD, this book shows you how to take back the power it has had over your life. Obviously OCD doesn't go away, but there are many practical solutions offered that help you develop coping skills.
We bought this book for our 7 year old daughter who suffers from intrusive thoughts (OCD) and anxiety about being late, among other things. This is a great book for OCD and anxiety. It uses behavioral therapy that really works and helps kids/parents feel empowered to fight OCD thoughts/controls. It also helps your child (adults too) feel like they are not alone and you can deal with even the scariest thoughts or repeative behavior. The exercises are easy to follow and clear. It includes suggestions and support for family members. It is good for any age. Fighting anxiety/OCD is time consuming, but worth every effort.

I'm a therapist, and purchased this to use with a teenage client struggling with OCD. It's helpful to use this in conjunction with March's "OCD in Children and Adolescents: A Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment Manual," which is geared towad professionals and presents a framework for treatment. "Talking Back to OCD" indicates that it can be used outside of the therapeutic context; however, I found it helpful to use in treatment. The book's format covers education about OCD, how to externalize OCD (seeing OCD, not the child, as the problem) and then step by step ways to strengthen coping skills and prepare the child for exposure and response prevention tasks. Teenage clients like the concept of "talking back" to OCD and identifying the ways in which OCD has tried to "trick" them. The approach of this book allows parents and children (along with therapists) to "team up" against OCD. I've seen this process of externalizing the problem bring much relief to clients who have personalized their OCD symptoms and believe there is something "wrong" with them. The chapters for parents are helpful in bringing caregivers onto the treatment team; I discovered that teens also benefit from reading the parent chapters.The tools in the book help clients to become more aware of their own thought processes when compulsive behavior kicks in, so that they can begin to modify and challenge "OCD thoughts." The use of homework assignments is empowering for clients. My one complaint with the book is that I would have liked to see much more information on coping with obsessions-- repetitive bad thoughts. There was terrific, detailed information on reducing compulsive behavior such as hand washing, but I found myself wanting more on how to address the obsessive bad thoughts that often accompany OCD. I would highly recommend this book for families wanting to know more about helping their child with OCD, as well as for therapists seeking new tools to use with young clients.

This is a play that you need to see. It reads well if you have seen it, but if you haven't, there is a great deal that is lost. I had the pleasure of seeing this performed at the Wilma Theater in Philadelphia in the spring of 2016 (huge shout out for Philly - they have so many excellent theaters, including the Walnut, Arden, Quintessence, People's Light, EgoPo).This is an update of Dion Boucicault's "The Octoroon," which was set in the antebellum South. Branden Jacobs-Jenkins wrote his adaption in 2015 and it received strong reviews and a number of nominations. When I saw it at the Wilma Theater, many actors played multiple roles. They also wore a variety of white and black face, which added to the racial dynamics of the story (in one scene, a white man in red face attacked a villain, who was played by a black man wearing white face). A few times during the play, an actor playing Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (BJJ) and another one playing a "Black playwright" appear onstage and comment on the difficulties of making a play, the plot and provide other fascinating observations. The other major changes from Boucicault's version is the presence of two house slaves that talk in modern urban vernacular. There is humor in their language as they make light of their degradations.In reading it, one may not see the brilliance of it. Having seen it, I can follow the action and the meaning of BJJ. Even so, it doesn't read as well as it appeared on stage. It's excellent though. Do everything you can to see if performed.

This is a play that celebrates 19th-c melodrama and that pays the truest homage one can to the legacy of abolitionism: rambunctious celebration and stringent critique. Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins has written a terrific set of framing scenes for the play, foregrounding his own unstable identity as a "black playwright," as the lead introduces himself. It's a frame that teaches 21st-c audiences how to experience an 1859s melodrama; "An Octoroon" was second only to Uncle Tom's Cabin in popularity. This is an important and deeply messed-up play, poignant and cliched by turns -- and perfectly celebrated and presented by Jacobs-Jenkins. Easily the best play in London of the 2017 season.
yes i'd seen the play and wanted to fix it in my mind. the book which is extraordinary did just that. it's brilliant! found it interesting that while the play is very long the script of it is relatively short, owing to the lack of stage directions. e.g.: there's a box nearby. or not. all very much in keeping with the play.

After the death of his father Lamont AKA Hood is left at the tender age of 13 to provide and care for not only himself but for his 4 year old brother Moo. His Mother was addicted to that glass dick and there was nothing stopping her from getting it, including her own children. Hood & his little brother Moo soon find themselves sleeping in crack houses, alleys & abandoned cars, eating from trash cans and any handout they could get their hands on.Fat Daddy, a local barber shop owner and well known respected hustler soon notices the two homeless boys and offers them a place to rest their heads. Fat Daddy's roof comes with a price, cleaning the shop & staying in school were two rules that he demanded. Soon Hood shows the local trap boys that his heart is way bigger then his dick, and with his street mentality he lands himself the #1 spot in one of the most lucrative drug empires ran by Xan, a drug lord running Brownsville, Brooklyn. Life couldn't get any better after Hood was given his own team of trap boys. He had his Ace Dreko who was like a brother, and together ain't nothing could stop them. The story explodes from there as we learn about the evil darkness that is embedded in Dreko's veins. Hood soon falls in love with Egypt who is Fat Daddy's pride and joy. Different then most girls from the hood, Egypt has dreams of going to school and becoming a Doctor. Blood, lust and loyalty are all quickly tested and Hood is determined to put the pieces of the puzzle together because shit is just not adding up. Some of the most unimaginable things take place in this novel. From molestation, to same sex escapades, to the reality of HIV and AIDS you will not want to put this book down. If you can handle the gritty truth of the streets, then sit back and enjoy the ride.
I found hood to be refreshing, a rags to riches story, typical but it’s also a story about determination and never giving up. I saw that to be very refreshing. I’ve been looking for a book to keep my interest for awhile and this was it; thank you Norie, for another good read, you never disappoint!
This book was excellent! It had me on an emotional high the entire time. So many ups and downs, but one thing was for sure ..... Hood survived and through his losses, he was victorious.
I read this book and was totally blown away. You struggle with Lamont AKA Hood throughout the entire novel. Not only did he have it rough growing up, the problems continue to follow him thru his adult life. The most chilling character of this novel, however, was Dreko. I actually had nightmares about this character. He was so cold, insane, and evil. My heart went out to Egypt and Zena. Especially Zena. She got involved with the wrong guy and her life changed for the complete worst. I loved this book because it accurately tells how your life can literally change within a short amount of time. This book was awesome. Noire at best for sure!!!
"Hood" was a great book! I was hooked from page one. Noire did her thing, I always know when I get a Noire book it's gonna be a sure nuf page turner!Lamont aka Hood never had an easy life, he started out on his own at age 11 trying to take care if his baby brother Moo on the cold streets of Brooklyn. Their mom Marjay is a crackhead who leaves them to fend for themselves. Hood grows up and gets involves in the street life 100%. Hood's life is never easy and the people he loves most always seem to hurt him or leave him.This story had me hooked and the parts about Moo had me in tears literally, I could feel the pain and hurt. I also felt bad for Zena, and her baby Dreka.This is a must read Noire does not dissapoint!!

Borrowed this book in 2009!!! Got to the last 5 chapters and someone took it upon them self to "borrow" the already borrowed copy. Never stopped thinking about the book. Anyway I searched all over for another copy. Until three days ago when I got my kindle, I had come up empty. It's the FIRST purchase I made lol. Worth the chase & worth the $. Will read it over & over.
