I found this travel guide to be extremely convenient and informative for sightseeing around Beijing. For being a small book (it fit in my jean's back pocket), this book was packed with details and facts about the sights in the city. It was well organized so you were able to flip it open to a section about the neighborhood you were walking around in and easily find information about the area around you.The book also had plenty of "advice" organized as top 10 lists. One example was the "Top 10 Things to Avoid" list that actually listed out a couple of scams that I actually witnessed on my trip.The only setback with this book was the lack of Chinese translations in it. The language barrier in Beijing can be larger than the Great Wall at times especially when you are trying to communicate with taxi drivers or subway attendants on where you want to go. Usually, you need to plan out your day trip before you leave your hotel and ask your hotel manager to write, in Mandarin, where you want to go on a piece of paper that you would be able to show a taxi driver. A simple Mandarin translation for the place you want to go that you could point at next to titles within the book would have been IMMENSELY helpful and aided in more spontaneous day trips.All around great travel guide.
I'm a fan of the Top 10 series of books. They give you a good place to start for seeing the highlights of a city. I've been to Beijing a few times, and the city is so huge and complex that you need a good place to start if you only have a few days. Even if you're taking a guided tour, these books are still helpful because you'll be overwhelmed at places like the Forbidden City and want to make sure you are aware of the highlights before you step foot in it.The strongpoint of this book is the size. They practically live in my pocket when traveling and I use them for quick reference and are filled with post-it notes from research. The maps are decent for navigation when wandering around aimlessly.I've used DK Top 10 books in 20+ cities on 6 continents and am comfortable with them. They won't give you indepth city tips, but will give you a brief overview with lots of colorful photos and nice diagrams. Certainly the more research you do, the better and that includes other books. But if you want to get started and were *only* doing Beijing and needed a Top 10 book, the DK Top 10 Beijing is a great place to start.
The places are easy to find, the maps are great. The info is helpful. I just wish it had a little more history behind the memorials. I guess that's what you get if you buy the larger, fatter travel books. Overall it was a good book. I always, always use Top 10 or Day by day and I was not dissapointed with this one. Just wish i had more history when I got to the monuments. Also the area restaurants could use a little more description. I would recommend this book to anyone. I went to Beijing for 4.5 days. Left to Xi'an for one night. Totally worth it.
Best part was the restaurants, but second best was the excursions at the end of the book. Go to Shidu, it's like Yosemite park. And go see the kite shop! Hand painted and unbelievable. King of Netherlands goes there since he collects kites.

This is the story of Sir Francis Drake's voyage around the world told from the perspective of Francis Fletcher.It takes place on the GOLDEN HINDE, a ship that Drake took on his voyage around the world. It is a look at a famous sea voyage, written like it is giving advice to you on how to survive at sea, and every page has handy hints for the trip. My favorte advice is the page that says, "Aching and swollen joints? Bad breath? Bleeding gums? Teeth falling out? You have scurvy! Eat plenty of fresh fruit." This book is an awesome story for children (and even adults) who are interested in the Age of Exploration. The book is a non-fiction story. --Silas, Age 8
Amazing books, a wonderful add to any home library or homeschool collection. My kids love receiving these books, they are humorous and honest about the life during these times. The graphics are well done, colorful and fun to look at. The writing is perfect for younger kids, yet perfect for older elementary age kids. We look forward to more adding more and more to our collection.
I really learned a lot about Drake. What a gentleman. I am going to use this book in October when we study about explorers.

This book was so entertaining even I enjoyed reading it. It blended real facts with funny tidbits of the life and times of Sir Francis Drake. If your child has an explorer report to do and chooses Drake, by all means get this book!!
All of the "You Wouldn't Want to..." Books are fantastic!!! All are written by college and university professors and historians. While it's not light and fluffy kid reading, a lot of it is the hard truth about how terrible and often dangerous the real world in history has been. Great for the history buff, but the comic book style illustrations can grab a kid's attention (or someone with the attention of a kid). We have almost all of the books, my kids love them all.
