I think this book explains the fundamentals of colloid/surface chemistry very well. It gives some detailed examples, that if followed, provides the reader the concepts and insights that may be difficult to understand. As a student, I would recommend buying this book in the first year in a masters/ PhD program as the concepts can be used throughout the program.
Bought this as a supplement to my graduate courses in surface chemistry. While there is better text available for graduate-level study (Adamson and Gast), this book does a superb job of laying the foundation in colloids and surface chemistry. With a strong background in physical chemistry, the subject matter will be a breeze to learn. I struggled with the courses until I picked this up. I applaud the author for a fine job in organization and layout of material, as well as a basic delivery of theory.
...but it seems that Hiemenz has done it again. The formatting isn't excellent, and the organization and presentation could be better, but overall this is not an easy upper-undergrad subject to write a textbook about. Overall, Hiemenz does a good job of showing you the "source code," i.e. derivations/complete math, where it counts and skipping it when it doesn't. And though I hate doing the application-based problems at the back of the book (I prefer theory-type problems for understanding), I can't deny that they do solidify the concepts and drive in the key points. The quick review questions at the end of each chapter for re-visiting concepts are also very useful.
Not enough examples and overly wordy
This book provides a great overview of principles of colloid and surface chemistry. It is becoming slightly outdated but still adequately covers the basics necessary for a good understanding.
just as described
As a teacher of these topics I found this book an excellent one.A very good coverage of fundamentals such as surface and interfacial tension, intermolecular and colloidal interactions, colloidal stability, liophobic and liophylic colloids, electrokinetics phenomena. All these complex topics and more are treated in a very clear and rigorous way. I strongly reccomend this book.
this is a good textbook for use in a class. goes over many important concepts including rheology, colloid stability, light scattering, etc, but does so occasionally in a manner that is superficial.i would find this a good book to have sit on my desk for general reference on the subject, where, if the book did not have enough information, i would continue to a lit search.

GREAT GUIDE FOR HUNTING, FISHING, AND SIGHT-SEEING TRIPS IN THE OUACHITA MOUNTAINS OF ARK & OK.
I had this book before but ended up giving it away. This book replaced the one that got away !The book arrived in great shape and was not damaged in any way.
The Ouachita Mountains stretch across the border of southeastern Oklahoma into southwestern Arkansas, from roughly McAlester, OK, to Little Rock, AR. This excellent, 300-page guide describes just about everything anyone might want to know about the area, from geography and climate, to fishing and hunting opportunities, to historical tours. There are scores of detailed maps and charts, and many, many photographs. What I found most interesting were the chapters on historical tours across the region, with just about every town and hamlet described. (There are also whole chapters on Fort Smith, Hot Springs National Park, and Little Rock.) This is not only a great book to have with you if visiting the area, but it's also a terrific book for armchair travelers as well. A wonderful guidebook, highly recommended.

Review
"Each book in this series focuses on deadly and dangerous topics and their appeal to humans, in spite of their potential risks. With an emphasis on the 'wow' and the 'gross,' these beautifully photographed books will appeal to readers, especially boys. They could also serve as hi-lo books for older, struggling readers. Supplemental information and unfamiliar vocabulary are highlighted in colorful sidebars which are strategically placed so that they do not interfere with reading fluency. Each book ends with a listing of print and electronic resources for further exploration." ―Library Media Connection (Journal)

I am an intermediate classical player, and like a lot of learning classical guitarists I haven't paid a lot of attention to a study of the structure, use, and playing techniques related to chords. I've browsed a few books on learning chords. I like this one more than most because it gets right to the point, it introduces chords in a readily understandable technical frame of reference (theory) that brings a whole lot of stuff together in my mind. I know the frets very well, but never had an in-depth understanding of how logical chords are, and how easy they are to learn. This book plugs a lot of holes in my understanding, and I am confident it will make me a better classical players, and I believe it opens the door for me to learn other styles as well.
I picked up the guitar, along with Joseph Alexander's Beginner's Guess Lessons, a couple of months ago. Having taken a long hiatus from playing, except for a few failed and frustrating attempts to rush into all the material I knew ten or more years ago, I was thrilled with the author's teaching style and the quick progress I made. The First 100 Chords for Guitar is a fine extension for continuing my practice. The material in the first two chapters is similar to what is covered in Beginner's Guitar Lessons. Likewise, the practice routine and strumming patterns given are also much the same. That's what makes this title a success. With each new chord, Mr. Alexander takes the student through a routine to first build muscle memory for the fingering and then quickly places it in context by practicing chord changes and progressions. By the end of the first chapter alone, a student has the tools to play the rhythm to a huge number of songs, especially in the keys of A, C and G major, as well as E and A minor.More importantly, this book doesn't just give chord shapes and exercises before rushing on to more chord shapes and exercises. Mr. Alexander, as in Beginner's Guitar Lessons, urges patience and mastery. His teaching and practice methods don't merely show the student new chords, but aim to drill the muscles until playing that chord feels as natural as tapping your foot to the beat of your favorite song. He also provides a sensible plan for building speed with strumming chord changes and plenty of example chord progressions for practice.A few notes:1. Don't expect to rush through the lessons. Following the routine correctly, it will take about 20 minutes, give or take, to work through the first two chords properly. But, done properly, those two chords will be completely ingrained in your muscles memory.2. A metronome is a must for keeping time, as the practice routine speeds you along from single strums at a slow tempo to playing quarter and eighth note rhythms. Lots of apps for this; pick one, learn how it works and use it religiously.3. If you follow the methods given by the author, you're playing will improve.4. As with Beginner's Guitar Lessons, the one glaring omission is a section on tuning (at least in the Kindle version - I can't speak for the print version.) A properly fingered chord on an out of tune guitar sounds like a duck fight, so get a tuner (again, lots of apps for this) and tune your instrument before each practice session. Maybe I'm a harsh critic, but this is too important to leave out of a book geared toward beginners, and is the only thing holding me back from giving a five star rating.
This is a fantastic book to introduce the new player to chords. In addition to a great list of chords with diagrams, the author teaches you how to read chord diagrams, how to practice, strumming techniques, and how chords are formed and why. I would highly recommend this book for anyone just starting out on their guitar learning journey.
Like his other books, this one is written logically, clearly, and the information is presented in a way that anyone can understand it. I love the way it contains the first 100 chords - not 10, or 20, but 100. All you need to play many, many songs.
I also am an adult learner with background in classical studies...looking to play some other types of music...there as are so many choices in books and it can be hard to make a choose a good one online. I recently got a sea shanty book with only words no chords! Great...uggg. so the reviews on this book helped me make my decision.. There is also a very easy download offered...love it!! Nice bonus. Will be getting other books offered from this series!
Very well explained. I`ve been playing for 5 months and it is very clear for me as a beginner!
I've just started this book and am enjoying it. It's easy to understand for a beginner, and has me practicing chords from the beginning. It's definitely a good purchase.
I taught piano for 34 years (Berklee grad) and have been playing guitar for a long time as well. I actually purchased this book to help teach my girlfriend .I love the way the material is organized both pedagogically and also the way it is presented physically on the page.It is clear, concise, and really set up for someone to apply the material as they learn it.Another bonus is having access to the MP3 files so one can learn on their own and hear the examples demonstrated. This is my second purchase from Fundamental Changes (Simon Pratt's "Beyond Rhythim Guitar" which I purchased for myself) and I was equally impressed with that as well!https://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Rhythm-Guitar-around-Important-ebook/dp/B073RSX7JL/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1540918770&sr=8-2&keywords=guitar+simon+pratt+chordsKeep up the great work!

Gr 1–4—Did you ever wonder how Vincent van Gogh would paint a snowman? Or how Georgia O'Keeffe might depict the frozen subject? This book shows the reader how 17 well-known artists might illustrate this particular subject matter. The story begins with the simple way most know: draw three circles, add the eyes, triangle shaped nose, and a dotted smile. Then things become interesting. A snowman shape is incorporated into a famous artist's painting or one is created in his/her style. Instead of melting clocks, as in Salvador DalÃ's painting, we see liquefied snowmen. There is a pointillism snowman in the style of Georges Seurat, and you'll never look at Grant Wood's American Gothic painting the same again. The artwork is excellent as the illustrator captures the artist's style perfectly. The slight amount of text is just enough to engage young readers. A small hamster is the guide throughout. He dons a beret, mustache, or a bandaged ear (a tribute to van Gogh). The hamster may not be on every page, but when he is present, he adds humor. The end of the book includes information about the artists named and a bit about their individual styles of art. VERDICT An excellent way to introduce children to classic artists and their styles. It also might encourage budding artists to think outside the box and create images in their own unique style.—Barbara Spiri, Southborough Library, MA

Review
“With big, brightly colored original illustrations that range from evocative to downright authentic-looking, the Newbolds introduce 17 “modern†(more or less) painters by suggesting how each might have depicted a snowman. A smiling hamster wielding a paintbrush conducts viewers through a gallery that begins with a cubist “Picasso,†looks back to a vague shape in a Turneresque blizzard, and then darts in no particular order from Lichtenstein and O’Keeffe to Klimt, Pollock, Van Gogh (where the hamster acquires a bandage on its ear), Sonia Delaunay, and, finally, Grant Wood, with a version of American Gothic. Captions identify each artist, and appended biographical sketches add further information. For the most part, the artists make up a familiar roster of dead, white, male Europeans or Americans, and an inviting blank canvas at the end may prompt some would-be Picassos to draw directly on the page. Still, along with introductions to some significant figures in art history, readers will come away with clear notions of their characteristic styles, as well as visual differences between schools of art. †- John Peters, Booklist“ Lynn: Most of us, if asked to paint a snowman, would start with three circles, then add a few details. But Amy and Greg Newbold ask what a snowman would look like in the hands of famous painters. If Picasso Painted a Snowman (2017) is their delightful answer. A chubby little hamster takes readers through a series of snowman pictures, all painted in the styles of iconic artists, from Picasso to Jackson Pollack. Vibrant, imaginative, and playful, this charming book is an art history survey course in a picture book. Newbold has done a terrific job using images and concepts kids can easily grasp to demonstrate the individual styles of 17 artists. The back matter is just as well done as the illustrations. Short biographies of each artist focus on their style. Greg Newbold’s Advice for Artists adds three wonderful tips for young aspiring artists. And a section called “Meet the Artists†notes that none featured in the book actually painted a snowman. I loved all the illustrations here, so choosing a favorite would be almost impossible. I’m currently wavering between Gustav Klimt’s and Van Gogh’s examples. How about you?Cindy:  I don’t know, Lynn. I like your choices a lot, but Roy Lichtenstein’s comic snowman sure packs a wallop. BLAM! As I write my part of this post on a particularly difficult morning, I feel a lot like the surreal snowmen in the Salvador Dali version. Here’s how Amy describes their riff on melting clocks in Dali’s famous painting The Persistence of Memory: In Salvador Dali’s winter fantasy, snowmen drip like melty cheese. The hamster’s Dali-esque curved mustache is the piece de résistance! (And just one example of rodent humor on display.) My very favorite spread, though, might be one with a blank canvas propped on an easel with an encouragement to copy the page and make your own snowman. This is a ready-made art lesson for readers of any age. I want to get out my paints and create my own. Kids will, too. This book is sure to sell in art museum gift shops, but make sure your library or classroom or child or grandchild has one too...and some art supplies! †- Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan, Booklist Reader“This book was such a treat! Not only did it have an example of how Picasso may have depicted a snowman, it also had examples of how many other well-known artists such as Van Gogh and Monet would have painted their snowmen as well. If you’re a fan of the arts, or have seen many famous paintings, the beautiful illustrations in this book will certainly look familiar to you. This is a great book to introduce kids to the different styles of various famous artists. It’s perfect for little aspiring artists, and a treat for older ones!†- Shifa, Children's Book Council Staff Picks“ There are short ones and tall ones and fat ones and skinny ones. All sorts of items, natural and man-made are added to further distinguish their physical characteristics. Just as there are no two snowflakes alike, there are no two snowwomen, snowmen, snow children or snow creatures alike. Each one is as unique as its maker. An exploratory adventure begins when an unseen narrator says: But if Pablo Picasso painted a snowman it would look like . . . A page turn reveals the rather satisfied hamster holding a paint brush covered in red paint with a tube of red paint spilling out next to him. On the opposite page is a snowman portrayed in the style known as Cubism. Elements are rearranged and removed. Excitement follows page by page. Within a murky haze we are asked to find a single snowman. A superhero snowman comic-book style swings a fist as a loud BLAM! in red letters explodes on the canvas. A stark desert landscape hosts a snowman with a skull and antlers for a head and a lush floral array in its center. Can you identify the three artists?A brightly colored quilt wraps around a snow family. Haystacks stand with snowmen like sentries. Pablita Velarde's birds keep company with her snowman. Is there a snowman hidden in the Jackson Pollack splatters? No one can fail to recognize the painter who might have depicted snowmen languishing like wet noodles on an alien plain or the two snow people standing in front of buildings straight out of Americana, the one holding a shovel upright. With each revelation our knowledge grows.Artist Greg Newbold through meticulous research replicates the techniques and styles of each of the seventeen painters focusing on those most notable works. Some of his illustrations span a single page, edge to edge. Others appear as a large portion of an artist's canvas. Several cover two pages crossing the gutter. Two are placed playfully with overlapping corners, as if waiting to be hung on a wall.Art educators and those interested in art are going to be thrilled with If Picasso Painted a Snowman written by Amy Newbold with illustrations by Greg Newbold. In fact, even those who don't believe they like art will enjoy this book. The premise of using a snowman, in which most can identify, to present the artists is a marvelous idea. On the final two pages, the hamster invites you to paint your own picture on a page showing a blank easel you can replicate. The next six pages give more information about the artists. As a final note Greg gives artists three key points of advice.  It might be fun to ask students to research other artists and create snowmen as they would. If you are doing a Mock Caldecott unit, you might feature snowmen as drawn by Caldecott artists. This title would be a welcome addition in your professional and personal book collections. †- Xena's Mom, Librarian's Quest“... This a wonderful book! Many of the readers of MC have kids or are aunts and uncles. This book is for you and yours. It is a great introduction to a large variety of artists and their work, but also opens up the imagination to all the possibilities of different artists paint, but also how different thinkers might approach the same challenge.†- Howard Lyon, Muddycolors.blogspot“ The Newbolds use the example of a snowman to drive home the idea that “not all artists paint the same.†With a cherubic hamster as guide, who wields paintbrushes and mugs for readers, Amy Newbold imagines how 17 famous artists might have painted a snowman, giving her husband a chance to try out each artist’s style. A large snowman cuddles two smaller ones, all wrapped up in a quilted blanket, in a Klimt-inspired spread; in a remake of DalÃ’s The Persistence of Memory, flattened snowmen replace drooping clocks. Newbold keeps the text short and punchy (“Blam! Roy Lichtenstein’s snow hero saves the day!â€), and she covers a range of artistic styles, from Monet’s impressionism to Klee’s abstract art and the “flat†images of Pueblo artist Pablita Velarde. A blank easel invites readers to contribute their own snowmen, and the book concludes with capsule biographies of the featured painters. The hamster’s antics can be a bit much (he’s shown with a bandage over a missing ear on the Van Gogh page), but in all it’s an inviting introduction to a range of important painters. Ages 6–12. (Oct.) †- Publishers Weekly“ Did you ever wonder how Vincent van Gogh would paint a snowman? Or how Georgia O’Keeffe might depict the frozen subject? It also might encourage budding artists to think outside the box and create images in their own unique style †- School Library Journal Express“A range of art styles is explored in this picture book that invites readers to imagine how various artists would paint a snowman...The examples of the art mimic some of the artists' famous paintings but incorporate imagined snowmen into them. For example, Dali's "snowmen drip like melted cheese" in a double-page spread that emulates "The Persistence of Memory" with flattened, drooping snowmen rather than timepieces depicted on the surreal landscape...A closing spread with a blank easel nicely invites readers to copy it and make their own snowman painting. Endnotes provide further context about the artists...A playful introduction to various art movements...†- Kirkus

What a fun book! I bought this for all of my grandkids and nephew. I packaged it up with markers and paper so they can paint their own snowmen! My daughter who teaches 3rd grade is using this book in her art section. I Can;t wait for the the next edition! Great bios and artwork!
I found this author and illustrator, this year and am so pleased. I loved this married duo's work. Introducing art in such a clever way is a delight. These are many of the artists I introduced in elementary school as a volunteer art teacher. I would have loved having this resource. This book is beautiful, a good way to plan a visit to temples and gardens in Kyoto or to indulge in nostalgia if one has already been there. Some of the pictures are small . . . but they are clear. The text seems insightful.
