My thirteen-year-old daughter was having some bad attitude problems. She was very ungrateful, and most the things that came out of her mouth were angry. So when I finally had enough I decided to come up with a different kind of punishment. I would teach her different habits and force her if needed to remember all the reason she has to be grateful. When I came across this book I was thrilled. A Christian book on her level with inspiring stories. It was exactly what I needed. She read some of these stories alone, but every night we read a few together. Most of the stories are very short, I think some of the longest were about 7 pages, but usually they were two or three. We laughed, we cried, we bonded, we learned lots of things and saw things for many different points of view. Very great uplifting book about how God can turn anything around. And how you can always turn to him no matter how dark things look. I recommend this book to everyone!!!!
If you are a guy that was in a marriage where you were emotionally and/or verbally abused by your wife, do not buy this book! It felt toxic to me. I was looking for something that promoted healing, forgiveness, and not placing blame on one person or the other but this book does not do that. Ninety percent of the stories are written from the wives perspective (granted they may have been married to Gaston from Beauty and the Beast) but most left me feeling worse for the wear. Even some of the stories from the husbands perspective had a strong tinge of "but it was my fault- I was a jerk." In our current social framework this book fits right in to the narrative that "men are the problem." If are a great guy and was married to Cruella de Vil, this is not the book to help you heal.
If you are down, or have health issues, family problems, or any other situation of that nature, this book will lift and inspire you. While it won't eradicate all troubles, it demonstrates how individuals through prayer and divine intervention saw the light and had a profound effect in their lives.While some of the "Chicken Soup" books I didn't care for; this one is exceptional. It is a must read for a dose of good old fashioned faith!.
I found this book to be very comforting as I went through my grief of losing my husband unexpectedly . Reading the stories of other people who have lost loved ones and have found a new life and hope encouraged me that my life would go on and that I could obtain happiness in spite of my grief.
The order was fine. The book was in excellent condition. But it is a terrible book. The stories are superficial and shallow. The problems were so incredibly trivial and full of self pity i could hardly stand it. For example, “I broke my leg and it ruined my vacationâ€. I was hoping for something with more substance.
Gave it as a gift to a dear friend who loss a loved one. She loved the book and read it every night was great to give to her when she was going through a loss of a loved one and for anyone who loves reading about messages from heaven anytime!
Another great Chicken Soup book. I saw a lot of Zen thinking in this book. It showed me, once again, that acceptance of a situation, concentration on the present moment, and enjoyment of the good, positive aspects of all circumstances helps us to rise above difficulties. Some of the authors have illnesses or disabilities which would depress many people. Would you see the positive side of Alzheimer's Disease? Could you still be happy if you had macular degeneration and were slowly going blind? Could you have Asperger Syndrome and still want to travel the world knowing that you were directionally-challenged? I don't think I've ever made it through a Chicken Soup book without crying. And this book was no exception. It was so moving. I am a person who tries to look for the silver lining, but I often fall short, and this book has helped me to look for the beauty in all circumstances.
I always say that you can't go wrong with Chicken Soup. I don't think I will ever give one of these books less than four stars. This is another one that is so filled with wisdom and inspiration that I was looking forward each day to reading more stories. Many people had to climb the ladder of success in order to achieve happiness. They had to get more education and training. Others had to downsize. They already had degrees and high-powered careers, but they weren't happy. Sometimes that six-letter word, stress, was slowly killing them. One became a full-time stay-at-home mom and found that PB and jelly with her kids beat luncheons with executives. One went from management to administrative work as an executive secretary and was so much happier. Many people came to realize that managing with less money wasn't a hardship if they had less stress and more peace in their lives.Others had handicaps or illnesses that they needed to accept. One blind woman made such a beautiful life for herself that a cure for her blindness wasn't the end-all and be-all of her existence anymore. As usual, I was truly moved and astounded by so many of these stories. Others were pleasant stories, but they didn't have the power to really move me to a great degree. This is a matter of personal taste I'm sure. But I had to take a star off because of the stories that didn't have the punch that I've learned to expect--the stories that move me to tears or really amaze me with their wisdom and beauty.It's a wonderful book for the bedside--sure to relax you and give you hope. By the way, I know that some people can be turned off by stories about people who leave perfectly good jobs to find a more peaceful existence. People can't always leave their jobs, but I seem to remember that there were some good ideas here for making the most of leisure time or achieving some balance in life. One story is even about the joy of having a box of chocolates all to yourself--loved that one!

Bought this for my honeymoon in Rome and it was very handy since we had our phone data off most of the time when we were wandering around. I loved that it was laminated so it didn't get wet during unexpected storms or when it was in my husband's Camelbak that leaked, and it folded up and fit perfectly in my small cross body bag. Also bought the map for Venice and it was just as helpful.
I needed a map of Rome, as was advertised. This map is of a very small portion of Rome. Should be advertised as " a very tiny area of central Rome with large portions obscured by insets and legends" Did this guy pay for good reviews? If you're expecting a folded map of the whole city of Rome, go else where.
Used it in Rome a couple of weeks ago, worked well, wish it covered more area.
Good laminated map of central Rome. Only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that it didn't provide map for areas beyond the city historic area of Rome.
Nothing replaces a well designed and accurate map. We tried using GPS on our phones which generally worked okay getting from point A. to point B. But a map lets you see what is off our route.
Love this map, it is spill proof and easy to read.

This is my first book for 2018, just finished last night. I was, and still am, reading another book at the same time, but for the first book of the year, this one seemed the most appropriate. It's not just because I am a big Le Guin and have been since high school, it's also because her work has always been a touchstone in my life, from The Dispossessed and Left Hand of Darkness and Language of the Night and ... (insert a string of titles here ) all read and reread I don't know how many times. I wrote my dissertation on her rhetorical use of myth.I recognized, and still recognize, myself in her stories and essays and I did, again here, in this beautiful collection of short essays and musings, in which she is examining "the last great frontier of life, old age, and exploring new literary territory: the blog, a forum where her voice--sharp, witty, as compassionate as it is critical--shines" (front cover). The subject matter ranges questions from readers, her cat, Pard, turning 80+, faith and belief, among others. She writes, as always, with grace and style. Her prose is beautiful. As Michael Chabon says, "As a deviser of worlds, as a literary stylist, as a social critic and as a storyteller, Le Guin has no peer" (back cover).My love affair continues.Highly recommended.
Do you realize how many books, and in how many genres, poet-fiction writer-essayist Ursula JK. Le Guin has published to date? Using the listing in the front of her latest collection, there are 23 works of fiction (novels and short stories, some of them extraordinarily influential), eleven books of poems (and a twelfth is mentioned in a piece in this book), and two volumes of translations (of Lao Tzu and Gabriela Mistral). She’s a force! And as in a collection of occasional pieces I just reviewed by polymath Umberto Eco (Chronicles of a Liquid Society), even her most occasional postings have substance. Reaching her early and then mid-eighties, she decides to venture into blogging. She posts sage to pithy comments on a wide range of topics, from the ups and downs of aging (read her assessment of the Harvard alumni survey), to the joys of raising a kitten to adult cathood. She writes: “I’ve lost faith in the saying ‘You’re only as old as you think you are,’ ever since I got old. â€She takes on the current fascination with the two most common cuss words, one dealing with procreation (but not really procreation, really with dominance and battering), the other with excretion. On being a writer, she notes that meaning in art isn’t the same as in science: “The meaning of the second law of thermodynamics … isn’t changed by who reads it, or when, or where. The meaning of Huckleberry Finn is…. Art is what an artist does, not what an artist explains…. All I expect of a good potter is to go and make another good pot.†There are sage comments on the craft of writing, on how being a woman writer discriminates against one in a still male dominated publishing and critics’ world. She asks why we never question the desirability of economic growth. And in a follow-up essay asks, “when did it become impossible for our government to ask its citizens to refrain from short-term gratification in order to serve a greater good?†(This is as close as she comes to an environmentalist critique in these short essays.) There is a lovely doggerel verse for her cat. (“His paws are white, his ears are black. / When he isn’t around I feel the lack……â€) Praise of a John Luther Adams piece. A visit to the Food Bank in Portland, Oregon. Meditations on a lynx, caged up in a wild life museum…. If you like good writing, and following the workings and musings of a sharp, oftimes witty, always observant mind at work, you’ll enjoy and admire these essays. I know I did.
These are collected blog posts, mostly, on a variety of subjects. I'm an older woman, and reading it was like sitting and talking with a dear friend. I suspect it will not seem so sharp, and funny, and wise to others. If you ARE an old lady, get this book. You will not be sorry.

I hope the words of someone of Le Guin's reputation and popularity will not fall on deaf ears. These are things we should hear, things we should consider, and this author is someone worth listening to.These are short essays, easy to read in a few minutes and provocative enough to keep you thinking. Great reading material for bedtime or when you just have a few minutes to read (but a lifetime to consider).

But Shabbat and a little Torah slip into my focus with each reading and, even if just for the 5 minutes it takes to read it, even if it is two days later, Esther reminds me to stop and allow Torah to teach me.
