Sandra Cabot is the medical and executive director of the Australian National Health Advisory Service. She graduated with honors in medicine and surgery from the University of Adelaide in South Australia in 1975. As part of her extracurricular medical training, she studied herbal medicine and nutritional medicine. Dr. Cabot began her medical career in 1980 as an obstetrician-gynecologist and practiced in Sydney Australia. I have almost all of Sandra Cabot's books. Disappointed with this one as it is way too general. The information in the book could be obtained via online research. Disappointed with the book.

This book brings together most of the current thinking about prevention of dementia and Alzheimer's and puts it together in an easy to read format. Of course, none of it is totally new, but the reasons for both physical and mental exercise and good nutrition for helping the brain and perhaps slowing down the effects of dementia are well explained. There is a very good section at the end of the book full of useful advice for carers. My only slight reservation is that this book may give false hope to people already well along the path of Alzheimer's, but most of the advice would be valuable for any of us at any age who want to keep our brains healthy for as long as possible.

Poetry is something I seldom read, but the range of philosophical and religious reflection in Hafiz' writing is amazing, delightful, and life-affirming. Not every poem is equally rewarding, but how could they be? The translations make these ancient short poems speak to the present day, but sometimes too much so--using terms that have only come into our language in the 20th or 21st centuries at times borders on "cutsie", which distracts from the true meaning. When Ladinsky sticks to standard and time-tested language and grammar, his translations have much deeper impact, for me anyway. I have not read other translations of Hafiz, but I imagine previous ones are full of "thee's" and "thou's", and less erudite perspectives. I highly recommend this book--for me is has more understanding and depth concerning daily living than Rumi, for instance. Just beware that there are some shockingly off-the-mark, if sincere, attempts to make this ancient poetry relevant to us now. Ladinsky apparently spent years working on this book, so my hat is off to his scholarship.

Many Sufi books, especially Sufi poetry, are difficult to use with youth since they have the tendency to take allegorical material as fact (when reading about love of God, that the poet is saying that he gets drunk or is having an affair with a particular woman, etc). Many translators, especially western translators, also have this trouble. However in this translation, the poems are beautiful translations that more faithfully translate the poet's intention.

This book is one I never tire of reading, and is one of my most treasured books of all time. I have given it many times as a gift to friends, and it has inspired me personally, both in my art and as an author in my poetry. Most of all, this translation honors the spirit of Hafiz as no other, capturing the intimacy with God in all its glory... with humor, with tenderness, with playfulness, with devotion and absolute joy. Hafiz is, in my opinion, the finest Persian mystic poet, even though Rumi is better known. Do not hesitate to add this to your library! Love Without Distance: A Heartscape of Art and Verse

Amazing poetry. Almost every piece has an "ahah!" in it, a surprise or a shock of recognition. I love Hafiz - although he lived many centuries ago, his poetry is so pertinent, and so beautiful, and this translation makes it very contemporary.

Awwwww - - -. I just opened my newly-arrived copy of The Gift. The pages opened at random and I was plunged into the deep sweetness of Hafiz's breathtaking poetry. The aroma was glorious. Of course I had to run to Amazon immediately to leave my words of astonishment before I ran out of breath. As a lifetime Catholic, I was not familiar with this 14th century Sufi master. And as a non-lover of poetry, I surprisingly found myself pulled in by the Amazon editorial phrase, these "ecstatic love songs." Indeed they are. And I am in love. If you live an inner life at all and have not yet met Hafiz, give yourself a "Gift" and make his acquaintance. Your heart will overflow to meet this man.

I loved his poem, "The Still Cup."I bought this book to have it, and read it in context with his other works.I am in dire need of appreciating Persian poets and Persian wisdom, and becoming humble in the face of his bright light.Hafiz is a remarkable poet, and someone who knows the life of the spirit quite well.He has much to teach us, me very much included.It is wonderful to see such kind, compassionate, funny, and uplifting and contemporary teaching from someone born in Persia in about 1325.And connection with the Spirit of God brings that brightness, is the lesson for me.

These poems have endured for 800+ years, they certainly don't need a review from me but here it goes - captivating, lyrical, and evocative. Truly a joy to read. These are still highly relevant works and a must-read for the faithful.Amazon sent me a book with a crumpled spine but replaced it quickly so I am still leaving 5-stars.

This little book is wonderful!!! Not just for birthday but for just some fun with the kids. Some are prize oriented so those are more for birthdays but not all are. These are older games. Some I played when I was little but just forgot about others are new to me. They are great to know so if there is a lull in a party you can quickly have a game to play without needing any supplies. I bought a used copy so my pin the tail on the donkey game has creases, but my little girl didn't mind and was ready to play as soon as she saw it. I definitely recommend this book for anyone with children. Enough games to entertain an entire birthday party and then some.

I recently gave a party for my 7 year old using games from this book. They had a blast! The games are VERY simple and definitely only for the age group that was recommended by Amazon. Most are the classics that you probably know already but when you sit down to think of things to do, you forget. Its a handy reference guide and not expensive. If you are looking for more complex or unique games, this isn't for you. But for the purpose it was intended, they nailed it. Oh, and it comes with the game of Pin the Tail on the Donkey...I bet that is at least $2-3 by itself in the store!

We bought this book on the occasion of our twin daughter's fourth birthday. It just so happened that developmentally they had started getting into playing games a few months before. We had initially thought just to break open the book at the party, but as usual, the girls spotted it on its arrival from Amazon. We ended up reading it almost every night, and they loved learning how to play the various games, and were excited about teaching their friends. To be honest, we didn't use all the games at the actual birthday party- too many things were going on. Still we were able to play a few of the games, like pin the tail. We'll probably use it again next year. Highly recommended if your parenting style is not the type that tries to outdo others with hiring more extravagant clowns or ponies...

I wish I had this book about 10 years ago. I think it would've helped me look at money differently and start the process to financial freedom. This book is very well written/easy to read and offers a lot of insight on how things work behind the scenes. I'm reading the book for a second time to digest some of the knowledge I missed the first time. The book changes your mindset and approach to unlocking financial freedom.

This is Dr. Shay's second volume in which he compares the experiences of Vietnam veterans to those of the men and women we read about in The Iliad and The Odyssey. This is astounding work. I have bought copies for friends, colleagues, and students. A most enlightening work that deserves a permanent place on your bookshelf. Too dense for a single read. You will bookmark it and return to it many times. It is for those us who wish to understand the horrors of war, what they do to the people who experience them and how to help those people heal themselves.

My research for publishing Courage in America: Warriors with Character consisted of studying over 150 books. Of that research, two standout among the scores of others: the one with the greatest influence on my research was Odysseus in America. Initially, it was like reading the cliff notes on the Odyssey. However, I was compared Dr Shay analysis of the 30 plus years of dealing with the most difficult cases of Viet Nam Veterans, I recognizes the many lesson learned for the tens of thousands of more recent veterans suffering from traumatic injuries both visible and invisible one's like TBI. Dr Shay takes the most difficult of subject and maintains the readers interest throughout the tome. Certainly, his book should be required reading in all classic and psychology courses in college as well as those high schools students who have an interest in volunteering for military careers.The other book that stands head and shoulders of others in my research was... "What it is like to go to War," by Karl Marlantes. I wish to thank both authors works for enabling my better understanding of the challenges of our nation's wounded warriors.

For insight into returning combat Veterans Dr. Shay is a wealth of insight. At times I got the feel that his reading of the Homer's classics moved toward isogesis (opposite of "exegesis"; reading his own meanings into the text). But with regard to his experience of working with Vietnam Veterans the book is worth buying twice.

Good companion to Dr. Shay's eye opening PTSD breakthrough, "Achilles in Vietnam". Even after all these years there were new revelations for this old Marine grunt reader. Highly recommended for the vet of any war or his family.

Nothing changes-only the characters' names. Odysseus, or maybe Ulysses, is going to find his way home but damaged as are the solders coming home now-to their bewildered wives who have had to cope in their absence-Doctor Jonathan Shay knows his history as was shown in ACHILLES IN VIETNAM. In this analysis of the return of the soldier he shows he understands the human heart as well. It is better to weep over a story because you can close the book-more difficult to cry over real life because then you will never stop.And we have been crying over Penelope and the wandering Odysseus forever-

A beautifully written account of the Vietnam combat veteran's struggle to resume his life after finishing his military service. Dr. Shay deserves a great deal of credit for his devotion to men who, after facing death, dismemberment and character damage, try to resume their lives. I have read the Odyssey several times but after reading his book about the trials of Odysseus, on rereading the Odyssey realized that previously I had been reading for entertainment. Now, I could see that Odysseus was a much damaged man. He was very successful as a warrior and military tactician, but was also distrustful, unable to delegate authority, constantly "on mission". This fits the profile of a psychologically damaged combat veteran. Dr. Shay's work with these veterans fills me with much admiration, especially since I have done similar work caring for many veterans and some Vietnamese refugees who also suffered in varying degree from PTSD.

Shay makes the Homeric epics sear and haunt through personal narrative of VietNam veterans. This second work, placed within the framework of the Odyssey, heightens the parallels: the long journey home-- wherever home is, and can one reintegrate back into family and society whole, if faith in the world is forever changed, and sense of self, forever altered. It's a good refresher.Same with the bar exam. I skimmed over my BarCharts both nights before the exam.

I love these quick study barcharts and used them in many subjects throughout law school. I do not find the Wills & Trusts one very useful because so much of it is state law. Idk what I expected (obviously these charts can't have all jurisdictions on them), but anyhoo.

Love this Bible! Exactly what I wanted. Its advertising is a touch misleading - it's thicker than the picture looks and I wouldn't call the text giant - but it's still perfect for someone who wants larger font but doesn't want a huge Bible. And it's too cute!Just remember that it's not red letter and doesn't have a lot of room in the margins for notes.

This bible is much more than just a Giant Print Compact. It is a well designed, very readable, single column bible.Why does it matter that it is single column?Well, For some time now, bibles have been designed so they are physically slimmer and smaller. The result is thinner paper, and double columns (more columns = more words on a page). Tradition has now set in and people are used to seeing a bible in a double column format. This is unfortunate simply because single columns are better for reading at any length (which is why novels, etc, are designed in a single column format), but you cant have your cake and eat it too so since it is cool to have an anorexic bible they are all double column with thin paper. Which is why I am excited about Zondervan taking a chance designing a small, fat bible with a simple interior design...it is enjoyable...Details:Paper: Better than average. I would guess that it is 24lb. Ghosting is not bad, but I have found that this is subjective to some degree. Different lighting conditions obviously affects ghosting but with the large type it is very easy to read in almost any lighting condition.Text: Font size is 12/13 (another wards it is not small...but not clown big). It is reasonably dark and crisp. Font types can be subjective, but this doesn't bother me (although I would not call it elegant). The text spreads nicely across the page at about 10-12 words per line, which is ideal for readability.Size & Binding: I would call it a Personal Size not Compact. The size is roughly 5x7.5" and it is thick...study bible thick which feels great in the hand. The extra weight adds to the limpness and it easily lies open. Nothing extra special about the cover. I have the Sierra/Black which is nice. The websites do not say that it has a sewn binding, but there is evidence that it might be: When you flex the spine you see stitches every 3/8", and there are signatures dividing the book block that are seen in sewn bibles.I hope to see more bibles designed this way.

I must say, this Bible is beautiful. The single column format is great. I believe the font should be much easier to read than normal size font Bibles. I am in my 50s and have been putting off eye glasses for quite some time. I believe the font is large enough to where clarity will not be an issue even without glasses. The Bible is a little thick and as indicated. The leather, in my opinion, is of much higher quality than normal imitation leather. It is a soft leather. I went to the bookstore today and saw this Bible knowing that it would be coming in the mail later today. I thought there had to be a difference between the two because the one at the bookstore was so beautiful and what I wanted. To my surprise, the two were the exact same. I just received it and could not be happier.

The Bible looks great. The picture they show on cover are not the same as the pictures they show in the customer pic. Not good. Much thicker than the pictures. The bible is good, just not what I thought it would be.

I'm getting older and need the larger print. However the print is not giant it is just slightly larger then normal. For me it is great as I need minimal help. If someone has serious vision problems then this is not your answer. Very nice looking and arrived earlier then expected.

The other day I went to a Christian Book Store and went through almost every Bible in the store(of which there were many). The surprising thing I found was that although there was a great variety of translations and sizes and shapes of Bibles, almost all were double column Bibles many difficult to read, unless you went to the most expensive Bibles. And after having this Bible here, purchased through Amazon(they had the NIV large print at the Christian Bookstore also) I have found this to be the most readable and accessible of almost all Bibles. And the translation, though it may have some flaws(they all do) is wonderful and excellent. The combination of the two qualities make it an incomparable reading Bible at an exceptional price. It is simple amazing what a difference the single column Bible makes. The only flaw seems to be a slight transparency to the paper. But just try this Bible and I suggest you might never go back to the double column Bibles for daily reading. Thank God and goodness I finally found it. Have a blessed day.

I have to admit I was a little skeptical about a bible claiming to be both compact and yet have giant, readable print. Based on other positive reviews, I bought this bible and I'm very glad that I did. For me, it's the perfect bible for, well, reading. For one thing, the single column format is great. You may remember the single column format from, uh, every other book you've ever read. There's a reason most books have just a single wide column of text...it's easier to read.The goals of giant print and compactness would seem to be at odds, but this bible delivers both. It's possible because, while the bible is compact in it's height and width, it is what I would call "chunky." But chunky in a good way. It's not a pocket bible by any stretch, so look elsewhere for that level of portability. I like the hefty feel of this bible in my hand. It's weight, along with it's soft cover, make it possible for the bible to lay open, even to a book near the end like James, and not keep closing on you.Another thing that makes this the perfect reading bible is the LACK of commentary. That's what your giant study bibles are for. It does have cross reference verses noted, which are important, but other than that it's just you and the text.Another note for potential buyers. Because of the giant print, the margins around the edge of the page are small...this is not a great bible to take notes in. You'll want a separate pad of paper or your study bible laying open for that.
