With all the extremes the world is experiencing, this book could not be more pertinent, on a personal and global level!Gregg Braden does not disappoint with his newest book 'HUMAN BY DESIGN'! All of the scientifically backed information helps us to understand the truth regarding the incredible and amazing beings we really are. I feel this book is vital in our process of honoring ourselves an eachother.

First of all, I want to say that Gregg Braden's book "Human by Design" was well-written and well-researched, and it was an enjoyable read. However, his conclusion that human beings are a singular species is simply untenable. There certainly are gaps and flaws in orthodox Darwinism, as the originator of the theory of natural selection freely admits. However, it is abundantly clear from the archeological record that primitive species die out and are replaced by more advanced species over time. There are two possibilities: 1) Primitive species evolve into more advanced species through a steady process of genetic mutation (with natural selection choosing winners over losers), or 2) advanced species simply pop into existence. It is apparent that Mr. Braden believes that fully modern humans simply popped into existence approximately 200,000 years ago as a result of two "chimpanzee chromosomes" fusing into a single "human chromosome 2." In other words, the human species does NOT belong to the tree of life, but is specially-created standalone species that was intelligently designed. Now it turns out that genetic mutations are occasionally accelerated for unknown reasons and significant changes sometimes occur over short periods of time, producing fossil gaps in the archeological record. However, the presence of gaps does not invalidate the conclusion that genetic mutation produces new species. All that is needed to produce a new species is to have one small population be separated from the main population and having to survive under stressful environmental conditions. It must be stressed that DNA is NOT a digital blueprint of a complete organism, but rather an instruction set on how to MAKE an organism utilizing highly-nonlinear processes and sophisticated feedback mechanisms that are not completely understood. Thus, making a simple modification to one gene can produce a drastic change to the entire organism. Modifying a particular gene belonging to a flying insect can produce an extra pair of wings (this has actually been demonstrated in the lab). If two sets of wings confers a survival advantage (or at least doesn't result in a dis-advantage) then the extra set of wings will appear in the offspring. Nobody "designed" the extra pair of wings..Getting back to the "Human by Design", the author proposes that separates humans from other apes is the sudden fusion of two "chimpanzee chromosomes." Well, let's see how that may have happened. First off, let's all agree that humans didn't evolve from chimpanzees, and propose instead that some other pre-human ape-like species existed which had 48 chromosomes. At some point in time, an egg from one of these creatures was fertilized having only 46 chromosomes. After 9 months or so, a fully-human baby popped out of her uterus. How could that singular human baby have survived and produced more 46-chromosome offspring? That scenario is completely untenable. There are two other possible ways of producing 46-chromosome humans without relying on evolution (mutation and natural selection):1) An advanced alien civilization came to Earth, looked around and saw a bunch of 48-chromosome apes living in Africa. So these aliens decided to take the genetic material from these apes and manufacture a 46-chromosome version in their genetics lab. Some readers may find this to be a plausible scenario, but I think it evades the question of how the advanced aliens who created us came about. Did another alien civilization create THEM? It seems like there must be aliens all the way down in order for this to play out.2) The other way an instantaneous act of human creation could have come about is found in the book of Genesis, where the raw material used to form the first humans wasn't "chimpanzee DNA" but just plain old dirt. Whenever there's a mystery that science cannot solve, it's awfully tempting to fall back to the argument that God (or some other super-intelligent and powerful being) did it.In conclusion, "Human by Design" does expose a mystery, but the conclusion that we're the product of intelligent design is simply untenable. There are a lot more losers than winners in the genetic lottery, just as there are a lot more losers than winners in any lottery. (It's an unfortunate fact that about 50% of fertilized human eggs fail to develop for natural reasons). Just like you only see pictures of lottery winners in newspapers and never the losers, the losers of the genetic lottery simply don't leave any traces in the fossil record. This makes it seem as if only purposeful mutations occur with a benevolent Intelligent Designer presiding over the process, but that simply ignores the fact that the vast majority of mutations that occur are defective and produce organisms that don't survive.Mr. Braden supports his conclusions with the thinnest of evidence. He reveals the astounding fact that homo sapiens sapiens did NOT evolve from homo neanderthalensis! No kidding. Science has known this for decades. "Modern" humans and neanderthals emerged from Africa at separate times, encountered each other in Europe and western Asia and occasionally interbred. We know that with the exception of east Asians, most humans carry neanderthal genes. And guess what? Neanderthals had 46 chromosomes just like us. Mr. Braden presents a diagram of human and pre-human fossils connected by dotted lines which are labeled with question marks, indicating that we have no idea which fossil emerged from which. The fact is that there were a number of pre-human species coexisting in Africa and elsewhere, which probably interbred and produced offspring that left a confusing array of fossils. So what? Look at the dog species. Dogs, wolves, dogs, dingos, and coyotes are considered separate "species" but they can in fact interbreed with each other (although they rarely do). The "tree of life" is more like a bush than a tree, producing a bewildering array of species and sub-species that makes it difficult to connect all the dots. The fact of the matter is that the modern human species is extremely genetically homogeneous as species go, making it seem as if we're somehow "special." But this was not always the case. Chimpanzees have far more genetic diversity between neighboring populations than humans do across the entire globe. But this is a result of the fact that humans almost went extinct -- twice -- resulting in a severe genetic bottleneck tracing back to the time of "mitochondrial Eve," one woman in that tiny group of survivors who gave each of us all of our mitochondrial DNA.I'm giving "Human by Design" five stars for readability and one star for scientific rigor, for an average of three stars.

Gregg Braden amazed me again.Eloquently interwoven science and spirituality makes an exciting reading time. When we thought we knew everything a new frontier opens right in front of our eyes.Thank you Gregg Braden for widening the path of knowledge and understanding.

Gregg Braden has done it again, this time with the book that pulls all of his previous books together. Whether you have read Spontaneous Healing of Belief, Deep Truth, Divine Matrix, or any of his other best-sellers, you'll find more of the classic Gregg Braden you love, plus all new research and case studies that explore Gregg's signature insights/questions into the nature of who we are, why we are here, and why we might be more than we can imagine. I started reading over the weekend and couldn't put it down. Highly recommend.

Excellent. Covers many different areas of human development. Not just one man's opinion but a collection of interesting discoveries from multiple and in many cases award winning Scientists. Gregg puts all the science together with explanations and proof that we are so much more than 'simple evolution' suggests. Why are we still teaching Darwin's' "theory of evolution" in our schools? (circa. 1859) Theory means unproven, yet has been taught for too many years as the only explanation for our existence. Maybe it's time to explore new scientific findings, such as, we are NOT descendants of apes, or Neanderthals.Gregg also covers many other interesting topics, such as how we can change our lifespan. It is a must read.Should be a text book in our schools!!

How many stars would I give this book? As many as is allowed! Gregg Braden has outdone even himself in clearly stating things that so need to be stated, and backed up by the latest findings in science. His delivery of the information is direct and concise, and I find the conclusions he draws to be "spot on"! A MUST READ for anyone serious about the "origin of species", and how that knowledge applies to our lives today.

I appreciate how Gregg clearly defines the scientific development of our contemporary understanding of humanity. how it has evolved over time as well as the new scientific discoveries that disprove the old theories. His personal perspectives and life experiences are an added bonus!. I have not completed the book and am now exploring the exercises he suggests in the later part of the book. I find them enlightening and helpful in my own personal development and healing. Thank you Gregg for sharing the depths of your research and your personal experiences with us!Take your time reading this book...there's a lot to take in!

I am a fan of Gregg Braden and this book was another hit. I appreciated the science throughout as I it helps the reader to put the information with current findings and content is not just based on author opinion. This book also felt empowering with its message...we are not victims of circumstance (include evolution) and are powerful beings and creators. My only criticism is that at times I felt he went a bit off topic trying to make too many points.

I am an ICU consultant, and consider myself fairly up to date on the literature. Still I have learned a lot from this book. It is one of few medical textbooks that is actually vell written, and it is truly a joy to read. It manages to relate the diseases and treatment options well to the physiology and pathophysiology in a way that I like a lot. This is the textbook I wish I had when I started out in ICU.

Great book. I am glad that I found it. Easy to read. Great information not only for young doctors who want to work in ICU, but Critical Care nurses and med surg nurses who want easier transition to the area of critical care. Some of the information I was looking for and couldn't find is provided in this book in an easy to read and understand format.

I love this book. It has given me a really solid foundation on the fundamentals of critical care management and really made me sound like a rockstar on rounds. I highly recommend it - definitely worth the price.Do note though - and Marino says it in his intro - that this really is *his* book. I can barely find fault with it and it is highly referenced, but as always, evidence changes and a couple minor management points have been updated since this edition came out. But you absolutely can't go wrong with the fundamentals he presents.

I am a Senior Nursing Student doing my practicum on a large Intensive Care Unit. This book along with the little ICU book is a good reference for any one in critical care. Our Med/Surg Nursing Textbooks only graze over or do not cover some of the information need for critical care. There is very little discussion of Central Venous Pressure monitoring, Balloon Pumps, Neuro Surgical devices such as a ventriculostomy in school.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about critical care nursing. Not the best book to sit down and read, but well worth it for reference. Highly recommend splurging for the this one instead of the Little ICU book. I got both and got to where I would haul around the larger book for more information.UPDATEI graduated school and am now working at a busy Level 2 Trauma Center as an ER nurse. This book is an essential reference for the ER,or Critical Care Nurse.

Great book!

I would highly recommend this for almost any medical professional who will have contact with critically ill patients. Came in very handy during my ICU rotations in medical school, and I will certainly refer to it throughout surgery residency and possibly fellowship. One of the gold standard texts in critical care, you can't go wrong on rounds when you say you read it in The ICU Book!

Very thorough book and surprisingly easy to read. It looks like a heavy and intimidating book, but I invite anyone to just starting reading it. You'll be surprised how quickly you get through it and how much you learn.

I read this book prior to starting my sub-I in the MICU. This is a one-of-a-kind book that combines basic physiology behind clinical decision making with the day-to-day practices at the bedside. The chapters are concise and to the point, making the book an easy read for all of us with little time (and patience). I kept it in the workroom and referred to it every day, and I know that I will be using it soon for my ICU months as a resident. Read it, use it, and benefit. I wish there is an equivalent book for the floor.

I don't understand the negative reviews for this book, calling it "banal", "tripe", and "girly foolishness". Obviously these are people who just "don't get it" and would never survive one summer in the ramshackle cottage on Martha's Vineyard with the Somers family. I LOVE this book. I've read it and re-read it over the years, from a tattered paperback, and recently bought it digitally to add to my Kindle library. Though I have not been part of a "summer sisters" style friendship, nor suffered betrayals from friends on the level of those in this tale, I can relate to the teenage friendship between the two girls. Judy Blume paints a lush portrait of an era, a location, and the conflicting characters and scenes: the high desert of New Mexico versus Cape Cod, the wealthy versus the lower middle class, and spoiled, needy Caitlin versus serious and pragmatic Vix.I grew up reading Judy Blume, but I'm no teen now. I'm in my 40s. Blume's graceful writing style never disappoints. Negative reviewers that have complained the young teens focus too much energy on their budding sexuality have obviously forgotten what it's like to be that age. In using varying viewpoints and characters narratives to tell the story, each character is well-developed from their own words and conversations as well as through the observations of others. As another reviewer astutely pointed out, Caitlin is the only one not given a voice. We only see her in the 3rd person, and I think that is intentional, as her character remains mysterious and conflicted in her motivations to the very (sad) end.1970s- '80s Martha's Vineyard and the late 20th century in general are characters in the story as well, and Blume expresses them both very dynamically. She's writing about kids several years older than me, the "cool kids" I looked up to when I was young, and seeing inside their lives and times makes me feel I've finally caught up with them. The love story between Vix and Bru is steamy for sure, and full of missteps that young people make. Bru's island guy local persona, tough but tender, quiet and calm, is mistaken by some reviewers as a cardboard portrait sans adequate development, but his simple straightforward demeanor should not be mistaken for lack of development. He is not a complex person. (Spoiler alert:)That's perhaps the main reason his relationship with Vix fails.I consider this book, a fast, fun and engaging read, one of Judy Blume's best.

I've been reading Judy Blume since her books were a selection in the Scholastic Magazine orders we got in elementary school once a month. She was my go to for my youth and adolescence - like a friend who like Vix in this novel, "Gets it".Like a first love, I still to this day will read one of her YA books (which take about 40 minutes when you're an adult ha!) for the nostalgia -Reading an adult oriented book by her seemed odd - how do you reconcile scoliosis, getting your period, learning how to swim, etc with reading a book that was designed for grown ups -She just nails it. I wonder how many other women in this world think like me ... That Judy had to have written this book just for me.Von isn't a National Treasure...Judy Blume is - and this book is amazing and complicated and if you don't see a bit of yourself somewhere in it - I would be very surprised.

Perfect beach/vacation book. I read it quickly. I wanted to read this because I’m a fan of Blume - her young adult books and “In The Unlikely Event”. Before I started this book, I suggested it to my adult niece. I was a little embarrassed because it gets very sexual very early in the book. I’m also debating if this is a book appropriate to leave in our neighborhood book exchange box. There’s nothing on the cover that suggests the level of sexual encounters in this story.

Vix meets the charismatic Caitlin when they were in fifth grade, and her life is changed forever when Caitlin invited Vic to spend the summer with her father's family on Martha's Vineyard. Vix discovers a much different way of life on the island than with her blue collar family in New Mexico. Together, the two girls discover boys, sex, growing up, and adult life. This novel traces their friendship and journeys of self-discovery from childhood until adulthood. It's a fast, easy read, not earth-shattering but pleasant, with some interesting characters, and a good sense of time (1970s until late 1990s).

I think we have all had a summer sister. Mine was Penny we did everything together. She was to me what Caitlin was to Vix. I thought she had it all. Even the boy she married. I think I idolized her back then. Many years have passed & where she is today only God knows. But I only hope the best for her.

I haven't read a book by Judy Blume in years so I didn't know what to expect when my sister recommended I read 'Summer Sisters". I was pleasantly surprised that I absolutely loved this book! I look forward to finding more hidden treasures but this wonderful seasoned author!

Unlikely friendship spanning over many years. Post the question why do we choose the friends we did?Perfectly describes the uncertainty of teenage years in terms of own self-image and self-worth.This is an eye opening read about friendships and the inability to get rid of toxic friends or to see friendships for what they really are.

This was an interesting story of two girls from different backgrounds neither of which were necessarily good and how they mature into adulthood. I found it sad in many ways but very easy to read. May come back and read it again in the future.

I used this guide during a recent visit to Provence and found it useful, interesting and intelligent. In fact some of the chapters on the culture, history and lifestyle were worth reading in themselves. It provides lots of factual information about the sights and provides useful tips. However, is not a guide to restaurants or hotels so if this is what you are looking for then this book is not for you. Personally I prefer this as many guides just sound like advertising puffs when they describe restaurants and bars.Another plus point is that it does not talk down to the reader as if he or she is an idiot who needs a dumbed down explanation of everything as Lonely Plant and similar brands often do. Nor is it politically correct, thanks goodness. On the other hand, it could have been edited as much of the information is of dubious value. After all, not everything in Provence is as great as its admirers make out and many of the endless villages, towns and ports are basically not worth visiting. For example, on Bonnieux it says: ”The village was well known for its bread and you can find out about its history at the Musee de la Boulangerie… housed in a former bakery”. Another place is apparently worth visiting because villagers built a low wall in the 16th century to keep out the plague. Yawn, yawn!

A good guide to get an overview of Provence, France's most enticing region, with photos that will want to make you catch the next flight there. Limited information on accommodation and restaurants but I use Trip Advisor for that stuff.

Very good over view of Provence & the French Riviera without getting too deep. The photos and maps were very helpful.

This book was not very helpful for us. The book is broken up by region, with a few paragraphs for each that region and major cities. The major highlights are listed in the paragraph. At the end, they have a list of places to each and stay. We found that information was almost useless and just a list of places to eat. It was hard to use the book to decide on places to visit and/or eat. This book does cover a broad region so maybe we expected to much. We left it in the recycling bin upon our checkout from the hotel.

Review

"A large part of what makes Gucwa's atmospheric photography so enthralling is her mastery at capturing light. Through natural light she is able to convey seasons, moods, nostalgia, and introspectiveness in the midst of the bustle of New York." - Print MagazineVivienne Gucwa captures the moments that make our New York minutes -- a snowy Times Square, the Manhattan Bridge lit up at night, a quiet walk through the West Village. A book tailor-made for any Gotham aficionado. - New York Post"While Gucwa captures the everyday moments of the city, her photos also capture a dreamy element of the city." - The Weather Channel Online "They're not just shots of a city at night or in the snow, they're photos of The City somehow, something timeless and invoking a feeling of fantasy. I love her narrative, too; it adds so much depth to the photos, and a very personal sense of the experience. However you describe her work, whether you're a lover of New York, The City or just great photos in general, Vivienne's book is well worth the price!" - Imaging Resource"If you want an authentic account of what all the different boroughs and neighborhoods of New York City feels like, not looks like, then do yourselves a favor and pick up a copy of this book for yourself." - Photofocus"...this 192-page book is filled with beautiful images that capture the color, vibrancy, artistry and uniqueness of New York City. In short - it never looked so good." - Yahoo News

As a NYC native, resident, and as a photographer, I really couldn't be more pleased with this book. The images contained throughout have a markedly classic feel to them. The scenes possess an intimate sense of wonder as opposed to an impersonal and caricatured feeling that is all too abundant when it comes to NYC photography. Whether it's a lone figure in the snow, or an empty street, there is an overwhelming sense of humanity on each page--something that may come as a shock to those who (incorrectly) perceive NYC as a cold, thoughtless place. Each visual vignette is immersive. Whether it's an alleyway in Chinatown or a wide open street in Times Square, there's a sense of scale that magnifies both the size and the congestion of the city. The overall palette looks modern, but feels nostalgic. All the lovely imagery on its own makes for a good experience, but Gucwa complements her photos with personal, but relatable statements about her connection to her home, as well as her craft. The content switches between reminiscent stories, tales of wonder, and poetic passages; they come together as a sort of diary, its pages steeped in love and adoration for a city with many suitors. The images pull you in, but the text holds your hand as a personal guide. If you're a photographer (or an aspiring one), flipping through the pages should give you some additional satisfaction, as the camera model and settings have been included alongside each photo. The cameras vary in ability and technical strength, but it's clear that the images-- and their creator--do not.New York is often romanticized, so it's hard to do so in a way that feels unique and genuine. NY Through the Lens manages to accomplish this feat without feeling hokey or contrived. It's a really fantastic collection of photography and a strong collection of writing. Pick it up.

i bought my copy on Amazon on the cheap. i have been watching this very talented young woman for many years. i captured the same scenes of New York City when i was in my 20's and 30's. my captures were created using black and white 35mm negative film using a Canon F-1 camera. she has become an artistic friend on FAA artists web site. my favorite image she has created was taken in Chinatown in the early morning. secondly i am moved by her Central Park images captured following snow storms. she is one amazing New York based photographer you must keep your eye on over the next forty years. she will continue too create some of the most important New York images ever created.

NY Through the Lens is a good book for New York City residents, those who once were and those who hope to be. It's an across-the-board compilation of excellent photos from both ground and bird's-eye level. (A little too much of the latter for me -- the roofs of most NYC buildings look much alike.) Ms. Gucwa nabs all the usual suspects -- Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Brooklyn Bridge, etc. -- but also features not-yet-gentrified neighborhoods (at least not obviously in the hands of the 1%); snowy streets, many at night (my favorite chapter); and street scenes reminiscent of a Scorsese film. She has a very good eye, and obviously spends a lot of time outside with her camera. Being a former harbor worker, I'd like to see more shots from the water, folks on the Staten Island Ferry, and so forth -- maybe she'll include them in her next book.Unlike many photo books, this one has coherent text, too, written in an almost confessional style that tells me more about Ms. Gucwa, a NYC native but from the far side of the East River (Queens). She is a good writer, adding just enough text to make the book more interesting, not so much you read half and move on. Her captions are mostly good, but many are repetitive if the pictures are similar -- in the vein of "Rooftops looking north from Empire State Building," "Rooftops looking south from Empire State Building," etc. But essentially it's a good read as well as a good look.Photographers take note: This isn't a photo how-to book, other than teaching by example. Ms. Gucwa includes info on camera, ISO and lens settings, but doesn't say what lens she used. In some cases it's not an issue -- she took many of the photos on her iPhone -- but when she used a pro level DSLR, I would have like to know what glass she shot through. Not that buying the same lens would make me as good a photographer....Despite its few minor slips, NY Through the Lens is a great book for folks who love the Big Apple. I'm glad I bought it, and I think you will be, too.

I am a born-and-bred Brooklynite with a tremendous sense of pride for my home. I also haven't lived in NYC since 2002. While I visit home about twice a year, I strongly identify with the big city in a lot ways. It defines who I am and how I act, even if I currently live in the laid back area of Portland, OR. I love reminiscing over my time back home and do often feel that tinge of regret about leaving. And then Vivienne Gucwa released her wonderful book, NY Through the Lens. The reason why this book is so special is not so much about what it is but rather about what it is not. I have a number of photography books dedicated to New York and the one thing that I noticed about them is their homogeneity. The pictures within these books seemed to blend together without conveying a sense of place or time. That's where Vivienne's book shines so brightly. The book is filled with purposeful photos that showcase a clear sense of place. They also exude with personal emotion, as illustrated by her wonderful writing and poetry that accompanies her imagery. I flip through this book not because I want to see what my home looks like but because I want to remember what it feels like. So thank you, Vivienne. You've done this New Yorker proud.Disclaimer: I am lucky to consider Vivienne a personal friend. Despite this, I preordered this book and paid in full just like so many of you. I am writing this review solely because I want to do my part in promoting it, as it deserves to be seen far and wide. I was not compensated in any way for it.

The Irrationals: A Story of the Numbers You Can't Count On, by Julian Havil

Review

"The insides of this book are as clever and compelling as the subtitle on the cover. Havil, a retired former master at Winchester College in England, where he taught math for decades, takes readers on a history of irrational numbers--numbers, like v2 or p, whose decimal expansion 'is neither finite nor recurring.' We start in ancient Greece with Pythagoras, whose thinking most likely helped to set the path toward the discovery of irrational numbers, and continue to the present day, pausing to ponder such questions as, 'Is the decimal expansion of an irrational number random?'"---Anna Kuchment, Scientific American"The Irrationals is a true mathematician's and historian's delight."---Robert Schaefer, New York Journal of Books"From its lively introduction straight through to a rousing finish this is a book which can be browsed for its collection of interesting facts or studied carefully by anyone with an interest in numbers and their history. . . . This is a wonderful book which should appeal to a broad audience. Its level of difficulty ranges nicely from ideas accessible to high school students to some very deep mathematics. Highly recommended!"---Richard Wilders, MAA Reviews"To follow the mathematical sections of the book, the reader should have at least a second-year undergraduate mathematical background, as the author does not shrink from providing some detailed arguments. However, the presentation of historical material is given in modern mathematical form. Many readers will encounter unfamiliar and surprising material in this field in which much remains to be explored."---E. J. Barbeau, Mathematical Reviews Clippings"[I]t is a book that can be warmly recommended to any mathematician or any reader who is generally interested in mathematics. One should be prepared to read some of the proofs. Skipping all the proofs would do injustice to the concept, leaving just a skinny skeleton, but skipping some of the most advanced ones is acceptable. The style, the well documented historical context and quotations mixed with references to modern situations make it a wonderful read."---A. Bultheel, European Mathematical Society"This is a well-written book to which senior high school students who do not intend to study mathematics at university should be exposed in their last two years at school. The ideas are challenging and provocative, with numerous clear diagrams. The topics are presented with numerous examples, and unobtrusive humour which renders the exposition even more palatable. The book would be an ideal source of ideas in a mathematics course within a liberal arts college because it links not only with the historical source of mathematics problems, but also with some of the great ideas of philosophy."---A. G. Shannon, Notes on Number Theory and Discrete Mathematics"Mathematicians and serious students of mathematics will find much to admire in this book. . . . Every mathematician and student of mathematics with appropriate background will find [it] to be a valuable resource."---Pamela Gorkin, Mathematical Intelligencer"Readers will be swept away by Havil's command of the subject and his wonderful writing style. The Irrationals is a lot of fun."―Robert Gross, coauthor of Fearless Symmetry: Exposing the Hidden Patterns of Numbers and Elliptic Tales: Curves, Counting, and Number Theory

Other reviewers point out the amazing depth and breadth of Havil's mathematical journey, and they're right. But another wonderful facet: Havel's command of English, and his continual use of subtle metaphor is delightful, humorous and, frankly, shocking! This is an awesomely right/left brain balanced talent whose intellect is as much fun to watch as the proofs and historical adventure. "We hope with sufficient conviction for hand-waving to be a positive signal" he quips, as an example of his continual tongue in cheek about ponderous scientific method and epistemology. He is genius at making sure we don't take "axioms" too seriously, and what better secret and oyster pearl grain irritant is there than the irrationals? This isn't just subtle-- Havel often points out limits in many senses of the word, from the essence of defining irrationals to quotes like "It is terrifying to think how much research is needed to determine the truth of even the most unimportant fact" (Stendhal) and "One can measure the importance of a scientific work by the number of earlier publications rendered superflous by it" (Hilbert). (Wonder how this would apply to the succession of the planet's Prophets??).In passing, Havel mentions the recent color reprint of Euclid's Elements as a "novelty" the reader might enjoy. That book:Six Books of Euclid is one of the most astonishing accomplishments in math, printing, education, graphics... and bankrupted the printer in the mid 1800's (originals now go for over $25,000). Pick it up-- it will also be a collector's item!Havel himself states that if you're not comfortable with real variable calculus and limits (as well as series), you'll get lost, however, with work, you can put the puzzle together with some missing pieces. There are several millions of dollars of worldwide unclaimed prizes in irrational proofs, so this might be a small stretch, but if you review calc II, you can, with effort, get this whole book. You don't need partial derivatives or imaginary numbers.Like many others, 5 stars! The diagrams and illustrations are not overwhelming, but if you add the graphics you'll find in The Six Books edition above, you'll have both an artist's and a mathematician's dream pair.

It fit the bill.

Interesting

For mathematicians, teachers or just math lovers, very good. It can be read several times, each with a deeperlevel of understanding (specially the demonstrations, some of which are quite elaborated).

I had to read this book twice. The first time I skimmed it and shyed away from the proofs. That was a mistake. If one takes one's time and tries to get a gist of what the proofs are trying to show, the reader will get a glimpse into the mysteries of irrational numbers. I would recommend the readers have some familiarity with college level mathematics when approaching this book. The reader will come away from this book with a better understanding of how mathematicians struggled with the irrationals over history and expanded understanding of this pandora's box opened by the legendary Hippias who was a pythagorean who shared the secret of their existence to the world and as the legend goes was thrown overboard a ship by his angry brethren. You will learn about Greek geometric proofs of incommeasurables. Next you will be introduced to surd arithmetic in India and Islamic civilization, then Medieval Europeans then pick up the thread. The proofs of pi and e irrationality are worth a closer look and Algebraic and Trancendentals are discussed along with proofs of e and pi as transcendental numbers. The later chapters cover the 19th century rigorists in Germany as the hammer out definitions of the irrationals and the real numbers. The last chapter covers some of the applications of the study of irrationals. One chapter I really like has a good discussion of the randomness with regard to irrationals. If you willing to put in some effort an it is an illuminating book.

Loved it. Sent it on to my Son.

Great!
