Sometimes you come across a book that encompasses so much of the human condition, it speaks to your entire soul. Genesis Begins again is one of those books.While this story follows the journey of Genesis specifically and the many ways she hates herself, I believe the author tells this story in such a way as to speak to anyone who has ever felt 'less than' in one way or another. I also loved that she tackled the difficult conversation of blackness from within the black community. It's clearly a topic people within the community need to address, but as a white reader, I learned a lot from this glimpse at Genesis's life. Thank you to Mrs. Williams for sharing Genesis with the world. I can't wait to read your next offering!

You know, as a parent, we often have to remind ourselves what it's like to be a young person again. The peer pressure, the "being cool", wearing the right clothes, listening to music that everyone else does, picking sports to play...as soon as you get away from it, you forget how traumatic it was! Genesis' voice brought me back to that time and reminded me of learning the hard lessons of who "real" friends are - and how much better off we are when we find and stick with them, no matter how unlikely our friendships may be! I LOVED this book. Alicia Williams' writing is real, relatable, and relevant. It makes me want to hug Genesis, my middle school self, and my middle school son - and tell us all: you're too awesome to worry about what anyone else thinks - you got this!
This book is so fundamentally important, and yet it never once feels heavy-handed. Williams deftly weaves important issues that real kids are dealing with into a funny, sometimes sad, and ultimately triumphant story. The strong voice carries the reader through, and it's honestly one of the best middle grade books I've read in a while.
This is one of the best Middle Grade books I've read in a while. I found myself 'talking'(at times yelling) to the main character as I sometimes do to TV shows - that's how involved I was in this story. I was drawn in by young Genesis, and rooted for her all the way. A Great read.
This was such a powerful book! As the step-mom of a biracial daughter and an educator of middle and high school students, I reas this book with interest, but sadness. As I walk into the school...as I talk with my daughter...I can’t help but think about and wonder how much they all carry under the surface. This book makes me want to do a better job of trying to empathize with their pain that they never talk about.
This book is bound to become a classic. It’s message is powerful and important. My 11-year-old daughter and her book club read it (along with the moms) and loved it. I highly recommend for ages 10 and up. There are some intense story lines (a parent’s addiction, etc) so I would suggest reading along with your child so they you can have dialogue about it.

As another review mentioned, reading this book is like sitting down at the kitchen table and learning about reef aquariums from a good friend. I wanted to catch up on any changes in the hobby since back when I started, and picked this because of its 5-star rating. I've read many books on reef aquariums, fish and coral over the years and this is easily one of the best. As someone who has had a reef aquarium for over 20 years, I can tell you that his information is accurate and his advice is spot-on. If you're just getting started with a reef aquarium, this is your go-to book.
I recently decided to start a saltwater tank and bought a Biocube 29. During my initial days of research, I combed the internet and found way too much information out there that was either contradicting or confusing (for a noob). I started searching Amazon for a book to read that kept it simple as possible and presented a reasonable amount of information for the money. I decided to download a sample for this book, and really liked the tone (not overly serious and sometimes quite funny), plus it covered everything a noob like me should know (without major overkill or information that might scare you from starting the hobby), so I decided to buy it.I read the entire book over the course of a couple days and LOVED it! The information presented was full and easy to understand, and fun to read. I highly recommend this book if you're thinking about starting a hobby or are in the initial stages of starting. I've gone to it a few times afterwards to re-fresh also, so it's a good point of reference to have on hand later on. I joined the author's blog and found it to be informative and he's very open to help anybody that might have a quirky question (like me!). Totally worth $8...don't hesitate especially if you enjoy the sample Kindle provides.
This book was a great introduction into the hobby, offering a great foundation for diving into the saltwater world. It was entertaining to read, and flowed well. This is hardly a comprehensive (or advanced) resource, so I would recommend this book as one component of your saltwater fish keeping library.
With a few decades of old school Amazon fresh water aquarium husbandry, I was encouraged to go salt water with a nano 20 gallon all in one tank. I needed a starting point resources, and found it 5 star in this book. Thank you for writing it!
As a beginner in the world of saltwater I've been reading every book I can find on the subject. This book and the other two written by the author have by far been the most informative and interesting as a beginner. The information in all three books have been to the point, realistic, and very easy to comprehend. A few books I've read you would need a degree in marine biology to understand but the author does a great job translating the never ending information needed to know for this hobby. I consider all three books a must read for anyone interested in the hobby, the authors knowledge mixed with his humor makes all three books an informative and easy read.
Most helpful of all & i've purchased & read 15 now. Many of the others are filled with great information it's just that this book gives you confidence to start & the desire to do a good job of it. He keeps it simple & gives you the rationale which makes you want to learn more. wish it was bound & not just an e-book...

I have been away from this subject for many years - I studied copyright law at Harvard and was Legal Advisor to the U.S. Copyright Office. This book sets forth the current state of this rather complex and ever-changing law in straightforward language, understandable by anyone who cares about the subject. It certainly is nicely bringing me up-to-date, for which I am grateful.
Forget casebooks, this book is enjoyable enough to read casually. The beginning of the book provides a great summary of copyright law in general, as well as an explanation of the other areas of Intellectual Property so you have your head in the right place before the idiosyncrasies of music copyright law are discussed.
I bought this first as a Kindle edition, but then ended up ordering the paperback. This is one you'll want to be able to highlight, mark in, and use beside other work. See my review of the text itself with the paperback edition.

Great book whether you’re a Marley expert or just learning about his music.
Very Good
The full title of Ritchie Unterberger’s book is ‘Bob Marley and the Wailers. The Ultimate Illustrated History’.Imagine, for a moment, that you were compiling the ultimate illustrated history of Bob’s life, what photographs would you include? There would doubtless be pictures of Bob’s parents, his birthplace and other places that meant a lot to him, as well as pictures of ‘Bunny’ Livingston, Peter Tosh, Joe Higgs, Desmond Dekker, Rita Anderson, Haile Selassie, Johnny Nash, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Chris Blackwell and all the other people who played an important part in his life, topped off with pictures of the man himself at all stages of his life, both in private and in performance.This book scores very well on most of these fronts, supplemented by plentiful photographs of records, posters and other memorabilia but is remiss in including no photograph of Marley’s manager Danny Sims. There are also no photographs of Bob in Zimbabwe or playing football. In addition, some photographs could have been better chosen. For example, there is a picture of Bob on stage with Michael Manley and Edward Seaga at the One Love Peace concert in Kingston on 22 April 1978, but it’s not a photograph of the two politicians shaking hands or a more iconic one of Bob hand-in-hand with the two men.The text, which includes brief album reviews and a selected discography, is generally very good, although here too, in one or two places, there’s scope for improvement. For example, it states that, “If his mixed racial background was … the possible source of some teasing from his peers as he grew up in black Jamaican society, Marley never let it hold him backâ€, when Kevin Macdonald’s excellent documentary ‘Marley’ (one of the sources used in the text) makes it crystal clear that there’s no question but that this was a source of teasing, or even bullying, of Bob in his youth.I don’t wish, however, to end on a negative note. If ‘Bob Marley and the Wailers. The Ultimate Illustrated History’ is not pictorially definitive or literally word perfect it is nevertheless a very enjoyable book indeed, which is lavishly illustrated throughout and much better researched and written than most such books. Any Marley fan would be very pleased to have it grace their shelves.
Bob Marley and the Wailers: The Ultimate Illustrated History is another great entry into the Quarto company's canon of excellent music books. Great pictures, graphics, cool and rare memorabilia make this book something you want to read from cover to cover. The other books Quarto has that are on my shelf regard Bob Dylan and the New Barbarians, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood's outside of the Stones project. What's great in addition to the eye-pleasing format of these books is the clear passion the writers have for their subjects. I couldn't have written them better myself! Might have to start collecting 'em all!
The Quarto Series of music books are a lot of fun and this one does not disappoint. This book is all about the photographs and it is filled with lots of great ones. The biography and discography are straight foreword with no real surprises. This book will appeal to casual and hardcore fans. Kick back with some good tunes and enjoy the read.

I wrote CloudMapper, an open-source tool for mapping AWS networks, and I'm learning a ton from reading this! This is not just a reference or something to blindly try to memorize in order to pass the specialty exam. This is actually a solid educational resource for actually learning AWS concepts. It expects you already know a lot of networking concepts and a lot about AWS. I get lost sometimes, but it's much easier and more comprehensive than trying to read the AWS whitepapers. Most AWS documents were written in isolation and have aged poorly, trying to tack on new information as things have changed, essentially feeling like you're reading a series of addendums. May books and other resources also feel this way. This is completely up-to-date as of 2018 as a coherent whole and ties all the networking concepts together.
This book is outstanding for AWS networking. I have the AWS Certified Advanced Networking Specialty (and six other AWS certs) and I wish that this book existed last summer when I took the exam. I highly recommend this book to everyone whose goal is a deep understanding of AWS. My opinion is that the authors are truly subject matter experts who actually know how to write. The editors did a great job polishing this book. This is my favorite book of all the books I have about AWS.
Like the review title says: you should check out this book whether or not you'd ever go for the certs.Anyone that's done advanced networking scenarios mentioned in this book can and should admit to themselves that there is some complexity to AWS (no matter how "easy" it is), and this book helps address those focal areas in a concise manner (vs. AWS docs, FAQs, and random web searches). While AWS is changing every few months, this book should remain relevant for years, due to the value in the core principles it covers.Each chapter also has labs that you can do in AWS, as well as practice questions for the test.Let's see what that covers, by chapter:1. Introduction to AWS Networking:50k ft. view basics2. Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) and Networking Fundamentals - everything regarding VPC configurationAnything associated with the VPC configuration panel goes here: subnets, route tables, IP addresses, security groups, network ACLs, gateways, NAT, and VPN. If you've used traditional load balancing, this chapter on ELB is very similar, and if not, it's a good resource anyway. If Amazon was to test on these subjects, you can imagine that they'd have questions as to whether Route 53 or ELB would be a good scenario, and this chapter should help.7. Amazon CloudFront - AWS' Content Delivery Network (CDN)This relatively short chapter covers the basics of working with CDNs, and the advanced features AWS has that tie into the value of having existing resources on the platform. If you need a primer on CDNs in general, this is not the place.8. Network Security - securing your AWS resourcesWhile reading this chapter won't make you an AWS security expert, it does steer you into some basic principles and design patterns, as well as provides info on security-focused AWS services. Hybrid Architectures - advanced AWS networking design for on-prem and AWS resourcesThis chapter returns to more advanced networking scenarios between your on-premise resources and AWS, e.g. Direct Connect, using Transitive Routing, and transit VPC scenarios. If you have a hybrid cloud, or even just AWS and on-prem, you'll benefit from this chapter.13. Network Troubleshooting - summary of troubleshooting with traditional tools and AWS toolsCovers AWS Direct Connect, Security Groups, Network ACLs, VPC peering, CloudFront, ELB, DNS, AWS service limits, and VPN / IKE with traditional and AWS-specific tools.14. Biling - short chapter to help you understand how billing works for all of the AWS networking-centric services covered15. Risk & Compliance - Risk Management for your AWS enivonmentFirst and foremost, this covers the AWS Services in Scope (compliance for external standards like PCI DSS) for AWS components like VPC, DNS, etc. Other resources, such as audit reports and whitepapers are linked This also covers encryption, and monitoring network activity with CloudWatch et al. Finally, malicious activity detection with AWS Shield and Anti-DDOS measures, VPC flow logs, and CloudWatch alerting.16. Scenarios and Reference Architectures - a short chapter covering how you'd apply the appropriate hybrid IT architecture connectivity solution based on what you've learned in the book
The book covers current (2018) exam topic according to AWS exam blueprint, provides a few inside information on how AWS works, although not needed for exam, tests you at the end of each chapter and presents exercises so you can practice around. Having hands on in AWS is the most effective way of learning and fixing concepts for the exam and when working with it. Book guides you in most network technologies for exam and use cases, points to references for more detailed documentation when needed. However it does not provide step by step instructions, it's up to reader to find out more about it as it happens in real life, which I find good, as it e stimulates investigation.One topic I missed is BGP entirely in details. Not that you need in all situations or even in the exam (as I haven't been tested yet) but I assumed some knowledge such as hierarchy of routing decision would be mentioned. This should be fine if it out of exam scope, and it does not harm going a step forward if you can reading more about it as well.
Comprehensive, but the book can use some editing. Some of the test question answers are missing or mislabeled. Also, some of the info needs updating. For example, there is one chapter that states that inter region vpc peering is not allowed, while current documentation and even other chapters in this book state that it is. Still, it’s a useful reference
This book is well organized and the scope matches to the Exam questions. Note: This book alone will not allow you to pass the exam, understanding the concept and 'applying' to various scenarios is what is being tested in the exam. This is a tough exam, I had 45 seconds left to complete my last question. My preparation included Linux Academy course and A Cloud Guru (I like Ryan Kroonenburg, he rocks, I owe all my 5 AWS certifications to him). Also checkout Michal Gasek's feedback in linked-in, I concur with him fully - Good Luck guys. Reason I gave 4 star is due to mistakes in the book, poor editing.
This is the kind of guide that makes preparing for certification worth your time. It can be hard to confine AWS Networking into a single volume, but the exam blueprint and this book do a good job of pulling together the use cases and occasionally some strong recommendations on the best way to solve your traffic flow goals in AWS. Well-written, and even the non-networker will find useful tips here.
Must have this book to pass the AWS Certified Advanced Networking Exam. The book covers all the topics on the exam, it's well put together and provides very concise information and where to go for further information if required.

Prehistoric mammals are not as fascinating to the public as dinosaurs, and we see many fewer popular books covering the topic. Two earlier attempts by professional paleontologists to cover the whole class that stick in my mind are “The Rise of the Mammals†by Michael Benton (1991) and “National Geographic Prehistoric Mammals†by Alan Turner (2004). The latter is memorable because it is illustrated by Mauricio Anton, whose work I greatly admire. In this tradition, but obviously much more up to date, is a new book “The Princeton Field Guide to Prehistoric Mammals†by Donald Prothero. Prothero works at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. He has published a few dozen books on a diversity of biological topics (crytozoology, global warming, the fossil evidence for evolution, etc.).Just a few weeks ago I reviewed “The Princeton Field Guide to Dinosaurs (Second Edition)â€. This is an illustrated encyclopedia of individual dinosaur species, organized by phylogeny, plus some introductory material. I expected “The Princeton Field Guide to Prehistoric Mammals†to have a similar format. However, as the author explains in the Preface, while there are only several hundred valid dinosaur species, there are several thousand species of living mammals at least a few thousand extinct ones. So TPFGTPM is organized to highlight 15 mammal families, each in its separate chapter, with some of the more important genera emphasized. Aside from the details specific families, there are introductory chapters that include the synapsids (often called “mammal-like reptilesâ€) and mesozoic mammals (who were neither marsupials nor placental mammals). There is a closing chapter on mammal evolution and extinction.As mentioned above, the organization of the mammal families in this book is done phylogenetically. Some phylogenetic information is gotten by comparing the skeletal anatomy of the mammals (much as is done with dinosaurs), but since relatives of some extinct mammals are still alive, we can also compare DNA sequences. In some cases the anatomic and genetic information lead to different conclusions. Two interesting examples: There is a group of mammals called the Afrotheria, which have a common genetic signature, but do not resemble each other in any significant way: elephants, manatees, hyraxes, and elephant shrews. There is a genetic link between whales and hippos that shows they are more closely related to each other than to other artiodactyls (even-toed hoofed mammals). One consequence is that other artiodactyls once thought to be ancestral to whales, e.g. the wolf-like mesonychids, acquired some of their whale-like anatomical features through convergence.On that topic, many examples in TPFGTPM show that convergent evolution among mammal groups is extremely common, and the overall body form of mammals is dictated more by their “job†than by their ancestry. For example, there are many versions of the “wolf†(by which we mean a mid-sized pursuit predator) besides the canine version we have today. Most of us know about the “thalacyine (marsupial) wolf†which has been extinct only for decades. Not too many people are aware of the above-mentioned mesonychids (Paleocene through Eocene), which are artiodactyls. They strike us as very strange because there are no extant hoofed predators. There are also the “bear dogs†(Oligocene to Miocene) and creodonts (Eocene to Miocene). The same thing could be said about “lionsâ€, “cowsâ€, and “flying squirrels.â€One of the most interesting discussions in TPFGTPM is about extinct families that are poorly organized even now. One example is the uintatheres, the rhino- to elephant-sized herbivorous mammals with large tusks and large knobs on their heads. Much of the confusion in this group was brought about circa 1872 by the 19th Century rival paleontologists Edward Drinker Cope and O. C. Marsh. Each of these men named a large number of species in this group, sometimes naming the same animal twice, sometimes giving the different animals the same name, and always ignoring the names created by his rival. While dozens of names were proposed, a hundred years later only a handful are recognized as valid. Even now, though, it is not clear that all animals assigned to the uintatheres are actually related.TPFGTPM is very heavily illustrated, averaging one illustration per page. There are photographs of fossils, clear diagrams (most of which show phylogenetic relationships), and life restorations. The signature type of illustration for this book is the silhouette of a man surrounded by restorations of one to a dozen species in the specific family under discussion. Most of the life restorations are by Mary Persis Williams, who is a well-known scientific illustrator and blogger.In most book reviews I usually make a comment about the “sweet spot†for popular books on paleontology (or science in general). I hope a book will present enough technical material to make it interesting for a knowledgable amateur like myself, but not assume I am already aware of fiddly anatomical terms. Also, the more unfamiliar material the better. In TPFGTPM I encountered many families of fossil mammals I had never heard of before. TPFGTPM shows that prehistoric mammals are just as weird and fascinating as dinosaurs, and you should have it in your library.
I can see why other reviewers were critical of Mary Williams art,as it certainly was a huge waste of potential. If Mauricio Anton,or Peter Schouten illustrated this book it would be worth it's weight in gold. However the illustrations are by no means terrible,with the only reason for complaint being that they aren't photorealistic like the work of the other two artists I mentioned. Nevertheless,as I stated in the headline there's plenty of the latest discoveries and lots of great information. I really enjoyed it,and highly recommend this book to anyone interested in ancient mammals.
Mammals are one of the most interesting groups of vertebrates, with a very long history, with the first proto-mammals living towards end of Paleozoic. This book written for an authority show us a wonderful world of beasts many of them extinct but spectacular as dinosaurs. Many of the mammal lineages are treated and pictured with adequate artist renderings. A book for anyone interested in the evolution of animals in all biogeographic realms.
Purchased this wonderful book for my son and he loves it! It's incredibly informative and well illustrated! We're extremely happy with this wonderful book and I highly recommend it to anyone, child or adult who is interested in prehistoric mammals!
This is comprehensive, well organized and easy to read. The drawings are helpful, but not a fanciful as in some other publications.
It's astonishing that such a complete book, with attractive drawings, can be so inexpensive. This is an excellent companion to their field guide for dinosaurs.
Awesome book. My fourth grader loves it! He wants to be a paleobiologist when he grows up and this book definitely satisfies his craving for academic stimulation.
Terrific book. Best book I have ever seen or read on the prehistoric mammals of the Ice Age era. Very readable. Highly recommended !
