And, God bless your honesty in recounting your parents last year's, and your experience as a caregiver. I imagine documenting the journey...complete with joys and pitfalls....in some way, provided you with closure. What you may be unaware of is how invaluable it is to those of us just beginning this phase with our own loved ones. There are so many questions needing answers and decisions to make. The resources are available. ..having the state of mind to find them becomes the challenge. Tho we all are aware "this" time will come, we spent very little time preparing for it...tomorrow, we say...tomorrow we will take care of everything. We are never ready when tomorrow becomes now.So, with that being said, I say thank you, Rebecca, for sharing your story. I felt as though I became one of those intimate strangers you wrote of. You made me smile, even laugh in parts, then have to stop reading because I was crying too hard to read your words in others. You became my friend, Rebecca, and that friendship and your heartfelt story are just the guidance I am going to need to get me through this journey I wish I didn't have to take. Tomorrow is now today.
Rebecca's book "The Thoughtful Caregiver" was immensely helpful during the painful months when I was caregiving my Mother after she had a traumatic brain injury. The format was thoughtful, with short, easily read and digested chapters full of relatable stories and helpful insights from the author's own caregiving experiences. This made is possible for me to read the book between and around caregiving activities. In the few, short, quiet moments when Mom would nap, I could dip in, find a morsel of inspiration or comfort and let it settle in my bones. It was a bit like having an on-demand friend available day or night. In my opinion, it's a resource well worth exploring.
