The Bountiful Container is a gardener's gem. The focus is on the world of containerized edibles - fruits, herbs, flowers and vegetables. It is encyclopedic in nature, yet written and designed in a very user friendly style. It is well-organized and full of quotes and sketches, making it easy to dive in anywhere. The advice is thorough, interesting and clearly the product of experience. This book is perfect reading during the cold months of winter - the gardener's down time. Not everyone has space for a full garden, but almost everyone can come up with a small space or even a windowsill for a container garden. And even with garden space, I really enjoy the look and function of containers. Many seed suppliers have curated collections of vegetables that grow beautifully in containers. Order this book along with a few seed catalogs, pick out some seeds and be inspired.
I am in love with this book. I just wanted a book to help me out with my vegetable gardening goals. I'm working with raised container gardens and some pots on my deck, and yet I have kind of unrealistically ambitious plans. Turns out I"m not so unrealistic as I thought! I almost bought a different book, but one of the reviews of THAT book told me to buy this book. I took a chance---so glad I did. I find this book to be very well-organized, practical, pleasant to look at, and included just enough information (and the stuff I wanted/needed to know). On the spectrum of gardeners, I'm somewhere between beginner and intermediate. I'm so excited about my garden's potential this year thanks to this book!
I have grown herbs and many kinds of veggies in containers for years, enjoy doing so and learning more. So many container gardening books are about containers--really cool objects used as pots happened upon at, say, a second-hand shop. This is not that kind of book. This book covers a broad range of topics (yes, containers), but mostly particular varieties of plants the two authors have had success with, keeping the soil healthy, a few recipes, a few line drawings, seasonal and geographic variables. The book is a tiny bit quirky in that every so often the individual voices of the authors come through if their experiences are different. The book is not dry and encyclopedic but rather full of good advice and the shared experience of two people who clearly like to grow all kinds of things in pots. For example, I never considered apple trees. The authors let the reader know what the possibilities are and what would preclude this as a good idea for some places.
I am very careful to read reviews before I purchase almost anything on Amazon, and this book was no exception. I worried about the compatibility of their suggestions of different plants in the same container. I looked on Google to see snippets of the book. I have never done much (really, any) gardening before.I purchased the book originally in paperback, and then several months later, when it became available for my Kindle for a steal of about $2. I tell everyone about it. I gave my original copy away to another apartment-dweller. I have memorized some of the sections, practically.And it's incredible. When I went shopping for soil, I found that the Miracle Gro Orangic Potting Soil for Container Veggies and Fruits had the ingredients these ladies DIDN'T recommend, and hardly any of the ones it did. I bought new potting soil for WAY cheaper, and my plants promptly popped out of their seeds. I listened to their pot recommendations, and LOVED the fact that it gave specific information on depth requirements for each plant. I have carrots, snap peas, lettuce, kale, New Zealand Spinach, potatoes, and a lemon tree all flourishing (relatively) on my patio. And I wouldn't have been able to do it without this book. To top it all off, I bought the vast majority of my seeds from McGee's family's Nichols Garden Nursery, and not only do they have the best seed strains and prices I could find anywhere online (disease-resistance is key!), they gave me a free seed packet! I have enough seeds to last me 5 years.I found their suggestions regarding light, fertilizer, soil, buying seeds, pot selection, disease, planting (either by seed or by transplant) all invaluable, and after all this you still have 75% of the book left to look up specific information on individual plants. And in these individual sections, their experience comes across in a big way. The only problem I've found thus far was with sprouting snap peas, but that was it(I discovered wrapping them in wet paper towel and then placing the wet-towel bundle in an open plastic bag pre-sprouted my seeds perfectly).I grow most of my plants in reusable grocery bags, the kind you get from the grocery store for about a dollar. I don't have a drill, so that somewhat limits my ability to capitalize on their encouragement to turn just about anything into a pot. With the bags, I just snip some holes in the bottom (and maybe bottom of the sides), fill with soil, plant, and that's it.

OMG this thing was super necessary for my contracts class. Perfect in every way. Honestly, you might be able to get by by just reading these quick briefs in class as opposed to doing the actual reading. Obv not the best choice but... you get what I mean. Also SUPER helpful for studying for the final because it gives you nice concise case rules for every case, which is good for putting together all the information from your class at the end of the semester. Absolutely a must if you want to feel prepared for class. Just read it right before class and you'll ace it if you get called on. It also gives you definitions for the fancy words you see in cases yet have no clue what it means.

It's amazing how many matches are won or lost on sports psychology, and yet after losing a match because of nerves or some related issue, players go and practice the shots they missed when they were nervous rather than address the reason they missed the shots with a dose of sports psychology."Have you ever stopped to consider how elite table tennis players deal with the pressure of competition and consistently perform at their best?" It covers sports psychology specifically for table tennis better than anything else I've read, since most other books are more general, for all sports. This version is greatly expanded, both the text and the title. One of the best cookbooks I’ve ever bought. Fascinating facts and traditions about all the schools, which my husband loved reading. I like that not only are there a ton of recipes but recipes for cocktails and mocktails and suggestions for twists on recipes. For instance there is a page with tons of different suggestions for stuffing jalapeños with a photo of each style. The recipes are creative but not too difficult and the images are great and festive. The forward by Finebaum is a great touch. Not just a gift for tailgating, a great gift for any cook really.

Featuring all of the SEC schools, complete with a short history about the University in the section, this cookbook has dishes representative of what readers might find at a tailgating party. The introduction includes tips for tailgating that are helpful to anyone having a backyard party, including safe holding temperatures and a handy chart for grilling meats and fish.Right off the bat, there are recipes such as Cranberry-Apple Breakfast Crumble (p. 42), a delicious offering that would be perfect for dessert as well, and Razorback Breakfast Casserole (p. 30), a savory dish filled with enough protein and carbohydrates to give eaters a good start to the day. There are refreshing beverage recipes for drinks like Watermelon-Mint Lemonade (p. 55), as well as a three page spread of spritzers for every team (pp. 71-73).Snacks and Dips are plentiful, just as one might expect. Readers can find recipes for tasty treats such as Ham and Cheddar Pinwheels (p. 38), Loaded Brisket Nachos (p. 167), and a two page spread of Jalapeño Poppers with recipes for each team (pp. 106-107). I read and absolutely loved "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon" and was very excited to pick up another book by Lin. This book was very similar to “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon†theme wise. I didn't like this book quite as much as that book, but it was still very good.This book follows a young boy named Rendi who has run away from home and is working as a chore boy in a small village. A mysterious lady arrives and, through stories, helps both the village and Rendi find their way.There is excellent storytelling in here and interesting folklore. I continue to really enjoy the way the book is put together with beautiful illustrations and full color plates throughout.I didn’t think this story was as engaging and fluid as “Where the Mountain Meets the Moonâ€. This book does weave a lot of stories within stories but they weren’t as adventurous..Overall I enjoyed this beautifully done Asian-themed folklore story. Although not as stunning as “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon†it still has a lot of the qualities that made me love that book. I recommend to those who enjoy folklore and fairy tales.
In my review of Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, I asserted that it comes as close to high art in children's books as you can find. That is still my opinion. Starry River of the Sky is advertised as a companion book, but it is really a prequel to the earlier book. I didn't realize that this was the case until about a quarter of the way into the book when Rendi, an angry boy forced to be a “chore boy†at a small town inn, tells a story about Magistrate Tiger, who plays a prominent role in Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. The main plot centers on Rendi who has run away from home and has a secret past that he hopes none of the other people at the inn discover. It also the case that he is the only one who seems to notice that the moon is missing. At night he is tormented by a crying, wailing sound that keeps him awake. He is resentful and goes out of his way to be cruel to others, especially the inn keep’s daughter, Peiyi. As with Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, Lin interweaves a number of stories told by various characters which begin to merge with the main plot line. We learn, for example, that the inn is located in the Village of Clear Sky because the Mountain Spirit moved the Never Ending Mountain out of fear that Peiyi’s great grandfather would dig up and carry it away so that it would no longer block his view of the sky. As the plot progresses, we meet new characters and learn about various conflicts among the town’s residents. We also slowly learn about Rendi’s past and admit to the source of his anger. Eventually, the missing moon is found and Rendi puts his anger aside, with an ending that anticipates several objects and events in Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. Other reviewers have noted that this is a story about forgiveness. But for me, it is more than people saying “I’m sorry†or “I forgive you.†It is how forgiveness can come from resolving problems to the satisfaction of both parties who feel wronged and how the aid of others is vital to this process. Although I did not find Starry River of the Sky as moving or memorable as Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, it is an excellent, inspiring story, with great artwork. Another gem by Grace Lin. I recommend it without reservation.
There are some authors that the minute I know they have a new book coming out, I immediately pre-order it. Grace Lin is one of those authors. Not just because I love her gorgeous illustrations (I love those bright colors she always uses), which I do, but also because her stories always draw me in and make me want to be a part of her characters lives. So, when I heard about this book, I knew I would love it and I did.Rendi is an interesting character from page one. While he is not particularly likeable at first, one quickly realizes that the reason he is such a jerk is because he is desperately unhappy. But it isn't until the arrival of Madame Chang that we slowly start to find out why. I also enjoyed the way the other characters lives slowly blend together with Rendi's to create a story of stories and their importance in our lives. I especially liked it when Madame Chang tells Rendi that the reason she asked him to tell stories of his own was because she wanted to know him better and that when we tell stories we reveal something of ourselves.I loved the way the different threads of the story came together at the end. Rendi's story, Madame Chang's story, Peiyi's and her father's and brother's stories as well as that of the missing moon all come together at the end revealing the underlying theme of forgiveness. If you haven't yet read this book, I highly recommend that you do. It's definitely going on my favorites shelf.
'Where the Mountain Meets the Moon' is perhaps my favorite children's book of all time. So when I heard Grace Lin was writing a companion novel in the same style (folktales and artwork interspersed), I knew I had to get my hands on it immediately, and I hoped it would live up to 'Where the Mountain...' To be brief, yes, it did live up to my expectations. Once again Lin gives us interesting characters, many of whom are more than meets the eye. The folktales told by these characters throughout the book intertwine with the main plot line at the end of the story. The main difference between this and 'Where the Mountain...' is that the setting remains constant. It is not a physical journey for our protagonist, Rendi, but rather an emotional journey as he discovers what is important to him. Overall, really enjoyable and beautiful. I hope Lin creates another one!

This book was assignment for a CPE class I completed. While mostly directed at ministers/priests/clergy and seminarians, it can be a resource for others to open how we view our own lives---the "myths" about ourselves and our families that persist and drive us---and ultimately to make the changes that can be the/a difference going forward.
Great book. It will cause you to ponder the events that has taken place in ones life and lead you in the right direction. It may cause you to recall things that you may not be comfortable uncovering. Just prepare yourself emotionally.
This book was recommended to me by my sister a minister who read it while in seminary. She stated it made her reexamine her own life and she gained a better perspective of how to live life to the fullest. She knew I've been struggling with a painful pass and have lost my direction for the future. She said this book would help. She also stated it will be a painful lesson but a lesson that will be of greater value for my future. Anything that will help me find myself, give me peace and take away some of my pain I'm grateful for.
Delivered quickly and in perfect condition! It is also an incredibly insightful read. I work as a hospital Chaplain so it speaks directly to what it is that I do, but I would suggest this book to just about anybody in need of spiritual renewal or retreat, particularly if you're serving in a field of ministry. I only wish that it came in digital form.
The way it was written both with its use of stories as examples along with the facts made this a very easy enjoyable read. The way the many myths play into the minister as an individual, as a parent in the ministers family and the minister as a part of the church family system was very well explained.
While I won't give a long detailed academic review, I will tell you that this text is a must read. It is especially helpful for those in healthcare ministry and anyone who is experiencing burnout will find this to be a useful tool in discovering the origins of your burnout as well as developing strategies for renewal. This book just might change your life and your ministry!
